The Steam Awards game list is embarrassing.
Seriously? THOSE are our choices? Not quite as embarrassing as online trading cards and the other assorted digital trinkets on Steam that you get for doing stuff or making purchases, but embarrassing none-the-less. Oh! And stop making it so games that come out at the end of the year can't count. By the way; are the awards called Steamies? They should be. Although this year they would be better suited with the name steaming pile, because these options stink.

/End rant

The Steam users voted for those games in round 1 in November.
So the ones you see now for the final round are the ones that got the most votes then.
So blame the average Steam user for choosing games you do not like.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why are you freaking out over something so trivial like this?
Nobody cares about which game gets elected as winner for said category, most people just do it for the badge.
"Not quite as embarrassing as online trading cards and the other assorted digital trinkets on Steam that you get for doing stuff or making purchases".

You would be amazed just how much money Steam makes from those trinkets. Possibly the most inspired marketing device ever.

And - you're suggesting that we should be voting for games released AFTER the nominations close ? Do you need one of us to explain how this system works ?

haha so true :erune:
Ah the sheer joy in seeing naive people think that an open, user-based vote is going to be anything more than generic and conservative in result.

Sorry, but that's these things work.

I've said it before, but I'll regale it again here.

Here in Britain we used to have one FABULOUS DJ on the radio for decades - John Peel. He was a dark horse. He played what HE wanted and he just wanted to hear new stuff. Many groups, including the White Stripes, owe their success to him. He famously played the WHOLE of side 1 of Tubular Bells on air and people bought that in droves. So he's a legend, and the more diverse the sound, the better.

So every year he'd do one viewer-voted "best of the year" thing called "the Festive Fifty". Can you guess where this is going?

He always remarked that it was rather conservative and a bit too middle of the road, but he stuck to it because it's what people voted for. He was right. I've got his biography which has these lists in the back and they are indeed this way.

So basically, you're complaining about basic human nature.

I don't have played any of this year games, so i put them random to get the cards. So yes, the choosen games are embarassing but the at same time why care about it ?
It's just a publicity stunt, nothing that matter.

Honorable mention to Valve to have added a category for VR : They should have named it : "Best game for an already dead technology for wich we have released the only memorable game in its whole existence".
But maybe it was too long :)

Lol, or the alternative title "the 3D award for most desperate attempt to push an ill-suited technology to relevance".

Yeah, virtual reality is now a thing, but I still have zero inclination to believe it will ever be a useful gaming medium. There's inherent barriers to entry for a start (such as motion sickness and discounting people with disabilities of many stripes), plus the fact that nobody has managed to make the movement relate to the system - that's too big a hurdle to get past at this point.

Now, for things like medical experimentation, gene sequencing and other scientific endeavours, it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome.

NFS Heat is nominated for sound track and has one of the worst sound tracks in any NFS game.

Not according to the peopel that voted for it, which beat everything else.

Funny how subjectivity and votes work, ain't it?

Welcome to reality

People are probably voting it just cuz they like NFS Heat, but the sound track is garbage. Find me a single person to disagree.
The problem with VR is R. Most people don't have enough space to safely use the tech as it stands. But how about a VR swivel gaming chair with controls on the handrests ? This could potentially give great accuracy, reasonable comfort, and could be used in a more limited space.

Nah, there's several reasons why it has these hurdles.

One of them is indeed the mobility. Even with someone like me, who can walk but has a wheelchair, that could work. But it's only solving MY Problem - not the many others who don't have the room even for such a chair and the expense involved on top.

But more than this, the movement problem I was referring to was more how it works IN GAME. In other words, you are using joysticks as of normal gaming. That completely flies in the face of the rest of VR, so it's jarring. I get it, if you're comfortable with that fine. But it IS a reason why it will never be adopted by and large.

And more than this even is the other issues - the headaches and motion sickness will ALWAYS be a thing, and for an awful lot of people they would either be unable to use it, or cannot use it for long. I've spoken to a number of people who said the first Oculus had pretty bad motion sickness, but now that they've improved it they can do about half an hour. Screw that, if true.

And then there's your gaming chair suggestion to add to that. Even assuming you didn't get headaches or whatever, it is a clumsy piece of kit to wear for anything like a normal period of gaming, and even worse, gaming chairs are DREADFUL for posture. And you can absolutely bet that should something like that be a thing, it would be overpriced, flashy and totally unfit for purpose.

Relax friend
People pick any FotM or random brainstorm game and go on. I doubt that more than 5 % take this seriously.

Of all people in entertainment and the arts, there's a few I truly, truly miss.

Rik Mayall being one, and Peelie being another.

It wasn't just that he was a down to earth guy. he created careers for so many, and nobody can ever fill his void.
