Thief won't launch
It used to work, a few years back, on this laptop, then stopped working. I just reinstalled Windows & installed & reinstalled Thief - same problems.

Basically, it launches, at least as far as the main menu, but then, when I click "play", the program just dies and vanishes.

It looks like a classic "lack of resources" problem, but the laptop has 32gB of RAM & I am starting Thief after reboot, without having started bunch of other apps.

Any ideas how I can get it to work? Any further info *I can give you to help you to help me?

What about the rest of your specs? RAM isn't everything.

Is this enough? If not, please tell me what you need and i will post it. MY previous laptop died, this one is 2 day days old and still has the same problem - Thief start to launch, then disappears.

Thief does not like to run on cpu with multiple cores, disable your other cores and only leave 1 running. That should fix it.
I had to do this before to get it running too.

It ran fine on the old multi-core laptop. I have it running too on my new multi-core laptop. Since it is a 2014 game, they were well aware about multi-core (the first was in 2011; read also https://www.newelectronics.co.uk/electronics-technology/the-evolution-of-the-microprocessor-from-single-cpus-to-many-core-devices/35556/)

I believe that I hav network problems, maybe my ISP, maybe my VPN. I will investiagte further & report back.

Ah the 2014 Thief, I thought you were referring to the 1998 Thief.
All the best, let us know how you go.

I finally got it running, but do not know why. Just left it for a few months, then tried again & it worked. Thanks for all the help & advice.

Most likely either some conflicting program that you used to have running in the background, or more likely, your antivrus being over zealous.

It's far from uncommon for games not to launch and find out your antivirus has quarantined something like the executable as a false positive. So always check there first and if anything steam or game-related is quarantined, make exception for it.
