Can someone explain why Steam didn't add an option to manually locate/discover existing game?
I know that if you just run the install with the game present Steam does all the work for you. But before Steam even attempts to install/detect a game, it will first check if you have enough of free room on the storage device you're trying to install the game to.

Now check this scenario. You install Red Dead Redemption 2 on your 240GB SSD. It's a large game, full install takes up over 118GB. Now, Steam gets screwed in some way and no longer detects your game as installed.

However, since the game takes over half of the size of the SSD, I cannot make room to have enough room to install it twice, not to mentioned I barely managed to make enough space to install it once.

Why exactly didn't Steam add an option to manually locate a game like Origin has? My download speed is bad, not really bad but it will take some time to download large games like RDR2. Also, I don't want my computer running a few nights again to download big games.

I tried different methods to fix this like screwing with app manifest and nothing worked.

THANKS STEAM.

Usually happens when you incorrectly exit Steam.

Installed games are appearing as uninstalled

Nope, it's not that.

Is it an external drive?

My game is not on my external drive, I don't think you get the problem I have. When I want Steam to discover the existing files for RDR2 it says there's no enough space and the game is already there. Just read the text again.

Perhaps you could troubleshoot the problem by going into...

Steam > Settings > Downloads > STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS

...and verify that the location where the game is installed to is correctly stated in that list.

Hotsauce might be able to explain more about what Steam is looking for with those paths but I assume that it, for one, points to the steamapps/ folder as a root for the games that are installed there.

On another note, you may not want to mess with the manifest, unless you know what you are doing. Right clicking a path gives you the option to repair it however what that involves I do not know.

I am only speculating that if this is set up correctly then the option to play the game should just light up without you ever having to point to it manually, since it is a little understated that the game would have to be in a steamapps folder somewhere. That is only my guess as to why the option to do it manually isn't there.

Steam doesn't need to. It will visit the library folders and scan the appmanifest files to know which games are where.
There are two ways it will not recognize them:
- them being installed on an external plate that was not connected upon launching Steam
- the appmanifest being corrupt

First is easily solvable by a restart, the second points to a problem with your machine. If it keeps happening and you can't figure out why, keep a backup of the file.

Steam already has a backup and restore function. Stop hacking 'restores' of games and use what's built into steam

Now, Steam gets screwed in some way and no longer detects your game as installed

In literally 16 years this has never happened to me with thousands of games installed. this only happens when people use unsupported external drives to use steam

The full game is right here on my SSD now. I want Steam to discover the existing files and not download the game again and it keeps saying there's no enough space. Really? Also happened to my friend, he had the same exact problem as me and I thought that's something because of him but no, it's because of Steam and now I see when I have this problem. He has the exact same problem with AC Odyssey and he wanted to play it on SSD, there was no way to fix this problem so he had to download the game again or play on the slow HDD he had.

Again thats irrelevant. use steam's backup/restore functionality

I want Steam to discover the existing files and not download the game again and it keeps saying there's no enough space.

Because

1) You do not hae the correct appmaifest files
2) ANd as such you functionally do not have enough space.
3) you didnt use steam's backup/restore function

Really? Also happened to my friend, he had the same exact problem as me and I thought that's something because of him

Its because of him/you not steam

I tried with both existing my default app manifest file not touched/edited, copied from my father who has RDR2 and also the game too, I am not the only one who had this problem (search it up) and I already said I tried different methods to fix this and yes I have space left, the game is there 118 GB RDR2 full game and how many times I have to tell you, it wants me to have twice the size of the game thinking I want to download the game but no. I just want to discover the existing files.

How do you not get what's happening here and what problem I have? Steam could make it really that simple and just add an option to discover/locate the game and done like on Origin. Really that simple.

Still not fixed, good job Steam. Also I copied RDR2 six times already to try and fix it but nope. What a waste of time.
