The gift card is a Wal-Mart only gift card, unless it states otherwise.

Is it a Visa gift card? Yes.

There's an easy way to tell for the future.

Go and try to buy any game on Steam and make your way to the checkout. See the symbols for the cards it accepts there? If your card has them then it will almost certainly work. If not, no.

As Hotsauce rightly points out gift cards that are just store credit in a certain store can only EVER be used in that store - they cannot be transferred back to cash even. They're just credit for THAT store and that's it.

VISA cards, whether credit cards, debit cards, or rechargable debit cards are fine.

ive had troubles with prepaid mastercard on steam. steam support said my bank was stopping the transactions ; but they weren't.

i just turned around and spent that card on wow instantly with zero issues.

i only use steam cards now because steam apparently sucks at taking my money heh - the steam cards always work flawlessly at least.

This is a common issue and Valve were not wrong.

The thing is the banking system that every online store MUST use has a load of security safeguards and stuff inherent, and a lot of them that are facing outwards to the users are generic. These are all done for a reason of security.

What can often happen with MasterCards, VISAs and so on is that certain banks and providers have fraud departments. They use their analytics to see trends - areas where fraud or card theft or skimming is prevalent. But they also check for common purchases - so as a precautionary thing, they often straight up put a hold on such places unless the customer rings up and queries it.

You may experience it with Apple i Tunes cards, Google Pay cards, and Steam itself. Why?

So if this has happened, what message will you (and Valve) get? YOUR BANK HAS DECLINED THE TRANSACTION. That is ALL you will get.

The simple reason for this is that if they were more precise, then that can give clues to a potential scammer to try another method.

You see?

Pro tip for the future - if you want to avoid unnecessary stuff like this, whenever you get a new card or bank account, ring your bank first to double-check that none of the places are restricted up front.

Always read the contract that comes right with the card itself. Everything is lined out there nice and legalese.
I have had issues with Mastercard Giftcards on steam. Visa Giftcards always worked without issue.

The card in question was one of those Green Dot reloadable walmart cards. But yes, it still declined it.As a matter of fact, It also declined my Direct Express Direct deposit SSI card as well. Reason was according to the Direct Express rep was "invalid provider". Apparently That has been flagged as well for possible fraud use. Always someone ruining it for the honest people.

you're aware you can buy Steam giftcards instead? your best bet is either to buy the Steam giftcards or use that debit card to buy Steam giftcards which are sold in almost all of the US retail chains.

They're not always in stock. I've rolled through several Walmarts and Targets and they were gone several times. Especially around the holidays.

All you can do is talk to the card provider. Nobody else can help. They are the ones that set the blocks and can remove them.
