Another Sega question.
Some kind people, I am assuming, directed me to the Sega 60 site where you can get a free Sega game. it looks legit - if it's a fraud they have gone to a HUGE amount of work.

The downside is that you have to "link" your Steam account by logging in there which involves breaking my cardinal rule and possibly my TOS with Steam.

Any comments ? I'm assuming someone from Sega should have mentioned this to Steam. I don't actually want the game that much but the game is currently full priced in a bundle which I'm currently interested in so if I have it I knock the price way down.

If you have a cardinal rule, why ask the question at all.

There's a second cardinal rule that you never turn down free stuff *

* Okay, there are exceptions.

It won't break your ToS with Steam.

If it's a scam attempt, it's a rather well done one. I haven't linked my account (not interested in the game, nor that bundle), but it looks safe enough.

If you want to know more about the free games from 15-18 October, this article lists the games with links to the Steam pages somwhere under the first Sonic screenshot: https://www.shacknews.com/article/120916/segas-60th-anniversary-will-feature-free-games-livestreams-interviews-and-more

There are never exceptions to cardinal rules, it would defeat the purpose.

The Sega one is safe if you got there through official means.

Sega uses the steam api to authorize users and send games directly to your account.

It’s functionally what many devs do to send creators games for testing

If you want to be safe on sign in to Steam on sites just sign in on a separate tab/window of the same browser and then click the sign-in, it should not ask for a password, just to approve to let them
I did the sega one its fine

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yeah this has been around for several instances now, like the Make War Not Love events in years prior. I never had any issues with those and indeed was redirected to those sites through STEAM, so I guess it is safe.

I was extra cautious because there has been an epidemic of fraudsters using phishing attacks to seize users accounts.

You aren't sending them any credentials at any rate. It's your Steam token, generated by your account. They can only verify your login and read\write info to your cloud. And no, Sega deosn't use Steam API. Sega uses OAuth, which uses Steam API. In other words, even if their side is compromised, your are not.

Anyway, if you are so obssessed with security, you can use Big Picture to get those freebies. It's Valve's browser, right? And don't forget to change your account token after the operation (though there is absolute no sense in that unless hackers would find a way to surrogate partners' key).
