Saying valve is a poor western company is a misstake, especially when they have been surviving this long without having financiall trouble. Unlike god old games for example.
Valve could easily do that but then again why? Their big userbase speaks for themself.
Gaining few exclusive to their store should not be caise for alarm when we have twice the backlogg of their games library.
The biggest retail companies killed off all the smaller stores this way. Open up, lower prices or get exclusive selling right to certain brands, keep losing money untill you bleed the rest of the stores dry. Once they close up raise the price higher than all the other stores that close down and voila, market is yours.
What a time to be alive
Where are you hearing Disney is backing Epic.. I haven't seen anything about that.. news to me..
As for Tencent.. in all honesty, how long do you think they'll want to be on board while Epic games loses money.. That's the big cog in the works.. Fortnite is making lots of money so the Epic store losses aren't too big of a deal, because those losses are re-couped by Fortnite.. If Fortnite dives or Epic starts losing too much money Tencent will apply pressure to Sweeney and things will change..
Tencent wants as much money as possible and right now I can't see how Epic is making money aside from Fortnite.. Yeah I know they have the Unreal engine but they weren't really swimming in money prior to Fortnite.. that game is what keeps the cash cow going..
As for Exclusivity, outside of Borderlands 3, and possibly the Ubi games (which most people will just buy straight from Uplay) they haven't gotten much of a return on the investment. considering they are paying millions to the publishers/developers for exclusive rights for a year..
It'll also be really interesting come December and January when games start to end their Epic exclusive period and release on steam.. Would be pretty ugly if a game releases on steam and outsells in a month what it sold for a whole year on Epic, which IN all honesty isn't that far of a stretch..
Only way Epic puts any fear in Valve is if they pull down lifetime exclusive rights or something like that.. one year isn't a big deal.. most gamers have massive backlogs anyway..
I'd say they got a pretty good return on investment.
Essentially, epic can afford these money pissing adventures because fornite is a license to print money.
I do wonder how epic plans to handle the eventual tulip crash.
