Only way to get the friends list back is to contact those who were in it.

The issue is more likely the fear factor, that you may lose your account, that caused it to seem like a legit change. It is one of the tools they use to get people to do it, so they can take the items. That along with forcing them to act quickly, before they can calm down and think.
Regardless, you now know and are not likely to fall for it again. Others, sadly, didn't find out until after losing the items.
