WITCHER 3 OR GTA 5?
I need help deciding? What do you love about each game? What are their strong/weak points? I LOVE open-world games but I don't know how Witcher 3 is when it comes to that in terms of owning things, buying a house, etc.

The Witcher 3 - beautiful map, nice atmosphere, a very good main quest, good side quests. You can upgrade yourself pretty well and your horse too. I don't remember if there was housing tho. But i don't think so. The Witcher 3 is one of the best games i ever played.

GtA V got a nice main quest and a huge map. The sidequests are pretty boring. You can buy your apartments, cars, clothe and weapons but the online mode is full of hackers and overpriced stuff.

I would aim for the Witcher 3.
Thank you for that insightful post! :)

Witcher 3 if you want a really well done story driven game, not to mention you easily spend 100+ hours in that game. I dont' even know if I can come up with a weak point for witcher 3. Also the developers of Witcher 3 really are one of the most consumer friendly companies out there. Witcher 3 had about 16 free DLC packs not to mention the base game comes with so many extra. The main story line is probably around 50ish hours if speed through it and the two DLCs are 8 hours(1st paid DLC) and 30ish(2nd paid DLC).

Posting your computer specs in threads like this is usually a good idea. How can we know your computer will play the game that we may want to suggest ?

Both are somewhat demanding, but TW3 is probably the more demanding between the two.

My rig is a laptop (needed it for portability - college life amirite?), with 16GB RAM and a GeForce 965m overclocked, as well as a 4th generation i7 (4720?) processor. Can run most newer games at comfy settings without a hitch :)
GTA 5 of +, if you like action.

These are the minimum for TW3 from the store page......

MINIMUM:
OS: 64-bit Windows 7, 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1) or 64-bit Windows 10
Processor: Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz / AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660 / AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
Storage: 35 GB available space

Your GPU is not quite there.......

The overclock "might" help, but still, very close to not meeting or actually not meeting the minimum.

And that is the minimum, keep in mind.

EDIT.....

Is this the same laptop you are talking about here ?

Because I highly doubt it has a 250 Hz display. I don't think you can get one that does.

And your base on that CPU is not even close either...

So running Windows in max performance mode would surely be needed, as then turbo gets you just over the minimum speed for TW3.

Which brings about another problem....overclocked GPU trying hard to keep up , MaX turbo on the CPU = HEAT...lots of heat, especially in a laptop.

If you prefer a more realistic setting, go for GTAV. Witcher 3 as you know is a fantasy world, that you might not like , the game itself is perhaps the best ever created but i for instance, played gtav through the end whereas i play witcher much slower since i'm not entirely into its world and setting. Also witcher 3 is much more demanding, i am not sure you can play it in high settings (i really doubt it), gta is a bit better optimised. Also for both games, you don't need to have played the previous games in the series.

He said he had a GTX 965m not 660 which you linked. His laptop can play witcher 3 just fine at 1080p.

The topic has changed from what you should play to what you can play. Your laptop will struggle to maintain 30fps for witcher assuming you play at 1920x1080p.

My GTX 970M can barely maintain 40fps and can sometimes dip to 24fps.

250 fps was referencing the fact that my GPU can handle optimized games quite well, has nothing to do with a monitor. And meh, I appreciate the advice but people also told me Id be running 20 fps on Arma 3 with my setup, I was averaging 40fps on decent settings. So the numbers are good referencing but games that I was told I couldnt run I was able to run just fine. So no worries about that. :)
If you're patient I suspect both will be even cheaper in the Autumn/Winter sales. Maybe not GTA V - sales have been very robust. Still I think there may now be one copy of GTA V sold for every hundred people on the planet so non budget sales may be getting exhausted by now.

Witcher 3 isn't genuine open-world as you do have to follow the yellow brick road story-line. The books are better and there are free translations on the web. Replayability is nil unless you missed a side-quest. I like rpg's but was disappointed in the witcher. Reminded me a lot of old rpg's like Drakensang.

GTA V is fun and fast but you can not really "use" the open world. You set a waypoint to a repeatable side quest and drive there.

If you play the single player, it is good, but none of the three protagonists is really a good and nice guy; it is GTA but still, why are 2 of 3 of the guys such douche bags.

If you play multiplayer, it can be a lot of fun and if you meet good guys it is really good.
But if you meet bad guys you will get killed as low level from a group of high levels, just because they can.

So, I only know GTA V, not the Witcher, but I'd say, get the Witcher. Chances are, you will have more fun there.
