If having the nickname "NOT HITLER" gets my name censored then the game Secret Hitler on Tabletop Sim should also be censored

What's wrong with having a nickname "NOT HITLER"? Ok I can see that it has the word "Hitler", I understand that it is offensive to some people, and I understand that Steam reserves the right to remove anything they deem inappropriate. That being said, I have the word NOT in front of the name. I'm not praising him nor am I saying anything overly offensive besides the name itself. I only changed it when playing Secret Hitler on Tabletop Sim with friends because HITLER IS LITERALLY THE NAME OF THE GAME. If I am being censored for my name without valid reason other than "gotta community rules and guidelines kiddo" then the game Secret Hitler should be censored as well. According to Steam, Secret Hitler as a name is just as offensive and inappropriate as NOT HITLER because they both contain the word Hitler right?

Just my 2 cents :) Feel free to disagree with me because I really don't care, it's 2020 we're better than this and I reserve my right to call out Steam for letting this very offensive game name run rampant in our community.

The Tabletop Simulator game you mention isn't listed as DLC for Tabletop Simulator on Steam. Valve can't do anything with games available on the Tabletop Simulator platform that aren't distributed through Steam.

I completely had the wrong assumption and thought Valve could control community content like this. Again, I don't care about the whole situation but I thought the double standard deserved to be called out. Thanks for informing me

Games have their own standard. Your profile name on the other hand MUST conform to steam's publicly visible standards.

We have had similar discussions like this before, where someone had their profile name changed from something like an image or title or symbol that apparently was reported by other Steam users, and the name/image/symbol/avatar on the profile was similar to one found in a game in the Steam store.

I think the idea is, if someone goes to the store to see that, that's on them. They made that choice.

But if we have offensive profile names or avatars, then those can be seen by others in the community such as posting in discussions, while having that name or profile avatar, where it was not their choice necessarily to see it but they have to because they are part of the same discussion or thread, for example.

When it concerns a Steam game in the Store, you are always free to use the report feature on that store page and voice your concerns that way.

Note I own Secret Hitler IRL and like nothing in the game requires you to decleare you are "not hilter" unless you're assassinated. that doesnt require you to make your profile 'not hilter' as its simply a declaration that the assassination failed and that you're out of the game. There's no need to say you are "Not Hilter" in your profile, because you are, by definiton,, out of the game and no one needs your profile name to be "Not Hitler" to track that. You are dead

That's it. You have to say silent for the rest of the game. Everyone knows you're out.

This is a classic example of Steam moderation failure in that their squad doesn't ever check itself.

The sole point of allowing censorship in English culture is to preserve the peace against anarchy.

Granted that Steam is chaotic, its peace is not broken by a user name; rather, one mod. is fragile.

Moderators are people who have access in moderating the Steam Discussions, they have jurisdiction to ban you from the discussions if it is deemed that you have an offensive name and publicly posting in the discussions using that name.

If you're using a name that encourages discrimination or includes a real person name's that is known for his cruel discriminatory acts, and then post on the Discussions forum, Moderators would have jurisdiction to ban you from it.

EDIT: Using the names and not posting in the discussion forums probably doesn't bring you any harm, but you need to read the content of the links above in order to get a more clear view of where you should use your content only at.
i.e It isn't the moderators that are being offended, they are protecting the users from seeing potentially offensive content.

People with the name do actually exist but it is extremely rare, but I doubt that this is the case with the OP.

Games have age gates, communities do not. Hence a different set of rules is applied. Content from outside of Steam certainly cannot be monitored by Valve.

The act itself has nothing to do with "failed moderation" or "censorship" (which is a word people keep using when it's not correct), but simply with rulesets and accessability.

Whether the name Hitler should be part of it is a different discussion.

To topic starter. Picking the name "Not hitler" in Secret Hitler is a good way to be targeted as Hitler. Also you're supposed to socialize in that game and not use your name to declare things.

Yeah because you know, it totally isn't linked to that one person in WW2 that caused a 6 million figure death count of a certain group. That might be worth putting a blanket ban on the name.

From time to time various things will be linked to bad stuff and people will just have to accept it and avoid using it. The bigger the bad thing that is done the less people want to relate to it.
