you might want id name ...since name you can change whenever you want ..and about id name nobody beside you know it
No one should know your log in ID, therefore it's not embarrassing. Accounts are not to be shared and your log in ID is not visible to anyone but you. This is not an issue unless you are incorrectly sharing your account, which you aren't supposed to be doing.
Your profile name is the only thing anyone should see and you can change that whenever you want.
this is not to say games haven't done this because DDO did they merged forum names into account names and that is what you saw. of course what that meant was people made trolling accounts to talk crap lol and hide their real accounts from ridicule.
i wonder how many people even care how Steam started or why. did Gaben know it would turn out the way it did? who knows. i just don't see why it really matters on the id name since your display name is what people see. it only matters to a single person per account.
You'll never be able to change that, its used by so many games and is the primary tracking number. If anyone harrasses you on steam its incredibly easy to just block and ignore them,
It is embarrassing for ME. In my case, it is my old nickname from almost 20 years ago, which I don't use and don't like anymore and brings me very bad memories.
I just can't understand the people trying to argue against this type of request, which may not be beneficial to you at the present time, but it may be something that you will need in the future. I would understand if it was something that somehow affected the experience of the people who don't care about it, but it won't. It is way easier to just ignore the subject. If you are not going to help a legit cause, at least try not to get in the way.
It's not a legit cause if you comprehend the technical issues involved with changing it.
Since you would rather hand wave away those explanations, your ranting is pointless.
If you think that's getting in the way, I don't care, and quite obviously neither does anyone who has the authority to even consider it.
If you don't like public feedback, then send your suggestions through steam support and don't post them to public discussion forums.
You are nobody to say that this cause is not legitimate. There are many people who demand this change and that alone makes it legitimate.
It's like asking people to stop requesting game updates because that would (in most cases, of course) involve technical issues. LMAO
I am a software engineer and I know that this task must require a considerable amount of work from Valve. I know how painful a PK change / migration can be in legacy databases, especially when considering the size of Valves one. But that's something Valve has to deal with, not you, unless you are part of their engineering team, which I doubt.
On the other hand, some like you, who probably only took theoretical classes on a cheap e-learning site, come here to fill their egos by ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ other legit claims while trying to show their pseudo-knowledge on the subject.
You say:
"If you think that's getting in the way, I don't care, and quite obviously neither does anyone who has the authority to even consider it."
Soon after:
"If you don't like public feedback, then send your suggestions through steam support and don't post them to public discussion forums."
I can't even think of a way in which someone would be able to expose their own hypocrisy quicker than that.
You can now progress to the intermediate level of your e-learning course and let us continue with our LEGIT request.
We have an example of what is likely to happen and what other things it affects - Sony did this a while ago. They allowed people to change their username.
And one of the downsides of this is that it can royally screw up progress under certain games (iirc Call of Duty was a casualty) and so much more.
It's a bit naive to think it's merely a matter of changing your name, but you have to appreciate that the WHOLE POINT of Steam is to have licences attached to your account. Well, that's an awful large potential to ♥♥♥♥ up.
So no I cannot see any reason this will ever happen anytime soon. The rewards are negligible and the risks monumental.
Me pointing out futility of your posts isn't hypocrisy and neither is my reminding you that you can make suggestions directly without public interaction. I never said you had to, only that you could.
You choose to continue crying in public. I choose to point out how useless that is. You can keep failing to understand that, but don't blame me for your misunderstanding.
Then again Steam id's are public so it could create security issue
But then again email usernames are usually completerly public and it is not considered a huge security risk
Email usernames are not public, no one but the person who logs in with them can see it.
