It's working as designed.
Are you just assuming that or can you explain why?
It's a button there is only access to by using a paperclip. It's not an on/off button. And it works just fine on ps3 (obviously) without having to use the button.
I've also used it before with 3rd party software (no longer needed since steam recognize ps3 controllers now) and didn't have this issue back then.
Thanks, I've used it before, but I prefer to just use steam since it does the job of that software now ... Except this is an issue that happens in steam only and not scp toolkit for some reason?
I'm thinking it might be a problem with my controller. I actually thought it was broken for years, it didin't even light up when charging or anything, untill I pressed the reset button and it worked again all of a sudden.
But it's consistently working now, except for not being detected everytime I restart my pc as mentioned. It's not the end of the world, but it's annoying to have a paperclip ready to press the button every time I want to use it :)
So would be cool to hear if other have had this issue. If not I think there's something wrong with my controller.
I use a PS3 controller on my PC, and haven't had any issue with having to reset it or anything. As long as it's plugged in it works fine through Steam even without SCP Toolkit.
The reset button is that little recessed one on the back of the controller, to the right of the screw and just below the USB port, yeah? Could be that something in your controller is a bit busted and it needs the reset for your PC to remember that it's there.
Oh, something that might help if you don't already do it! Whenever you restart your PC, make sure your controller isn't plugged in.

I love the ps3 controller, and since xbox one and ps4 controller is quite expensive, it's nice and cheap to buy ps3 controllers. Since you can buy a ps3 console with like 2 controllers and some games for like $30 on the used market, and sell the rest and maybe even make a profit :)
But at the same time I don't want to deal with annoying issues, so how is the ps3 controller working out for you on pc in 2020?
Sure.
When you restart your PC, it's loading all Windows assets up again. That includes the drivers for the PS3 controller.
So it's effectively like you powring up the thing each time, so you HAVE to turn it on with the button every time because that's how Sony desgined it to work.
There are some other frontends you can try using, like Joy2Key, etc, but I seriously doubt they can change the fundamental operation of the controller.
Just to be clear, I'm disabled and I miz and match controllers across a lot of platforms (because I have an interim device that allows me to use various controllers on whatever I wish). And each time I use a PS3 controller, it WILL behave with you needing to physically press the PS button to turn it on. That's by design.

Unplugging the usb before you start the pc also seems to work, like the other guy suggested. Other than that it's the reset button.
I think I will download scp toolkit again, because you can disable and enable through that software, and that should also do the trick.
Oh well, seems like I will just have to deal with it for now, untill I buy another controller (both my xbox and steam controller have buttons not working)

I love using the Sony controllers on PC. I prefer them to Xbox controller, mostly because I have smaller hands I guess. But they obviously fight with working correctly, so it can be a bit of a minefield to get front end programs to get them emulating correctly. It is FAR Better nowadays though.
I haven't done this myself, but I've heard good reports of some third party controllers that can double up as PS4 and Xbox One controllers. I'll have to find out who makes them, as most third parties tend to be false economies.
ScpToolkit is discontinued but still works on Windows 10, and is the best choice until the author completes the successor.
