LOL. I wonder why there is no 100% :)
1. Cheaters
2. Achievement ♥♥♥♥♥♥
Man, i would love to do a doc on them both. I have a feeling they would be very much the same.
Nowt wrong with curiosity and you were right to ask here.
Yeah, SAM can unlock anything in an instant, should you so wish. Of course, it defeats the purpose because achievements are either ignored by some and others use it as some sort of self-motivation or motivation with their friends. Kind of isn't much of an achievement to just unlock them in one go.
But I've posted before that I've used it because it is a helpful tool when things break.
For my example, I first got it when Killing Floor came out. At release there were about 6 maps on there, but they continually added events and maps several times so that now there's tons of maps on there. Those sometimes had achievements that you could unlock resulting in a skin being also unlocked.
And as sod's law would have it, the first time this happened, I went for it. Spent the week grinding out the achievements, and helping others do the same, only for it to glitch and the final achievement not unlock. So no skin. I found out about SAM and used it to unlock it. Simple as that.
I suppose the cardinal rule here is that like so many other things in life, it's a tool. Use it specifically for the purpose, and you won't go wrong. Use restraint or you lose meaning.
I do the same with cheats. If there's a game I really like, and I either beat it or finish it to a point I can be bothered with (like Dark Souls) I might want to go back and mess around with certain areas or see what's lurking in all the corners. So I happily cheat to have a nose around. I also often mess around with certain bits of code to tweak settings to my own liking and see if I can mod a game to do something different.
Of course, the restraint in this is I cheat for THOSE specific purposes and ALWAYS offline. Online play rarely interest me anyway, and even then I'm for helping others in co-op.
Frankly, that's a pretty damned awesome response.
It closely sums up what's the real thing about achievements. I'm basically the same, and I suspect many others are too.
I buy a huge amount of games, mostly because I wait for them to get cheap (being a tight-arse). So when it comes to achievements, if I get invested in the game, I will go through and likely get a fair amount of achievements, and may even go through the game a second time soon after to mop up one or two.
After that, there will be undoubtedly a few achievements left, but I'll just ignore them and at some point in the future, I'll fancy playing the game again, and go through and get those few achievements at the same time. Especially if they're ones that encourage a different way of playing.
Prime example for this recently was Prey. Got that on PS4, and loved it. finished it twice and after a few months went back and staerted the achievements for completion without killing any members of the station.
I find that when the game is as good as this, and the achievements can offer a bit more, they can be HUGELY satisfying.
And I definitely hear you about some achievements missing that really should be there. There's been a couple of late, but I can't put my finger on them right now, where I've wished there were an achievement for completing certain extras like you mention.
Depends what you mean by this as those terms are pretty broad.
If by cheaters you mean idiots who cheat in online games and ♥♥♥♥ things up for others, while gettig bugger all out of it much themselves, I'm right with you,
But achievement ♥♥♥♥♥♥ I can understand perfectly, though I'm not one of them. It's all about empathy, really as usual.
It's human nature - as humans we have evolved as pattern-seekers and we LOVE to do completionist things. That's baked into our genome.
SO it's perfectly normal for someone to want to hunt down every acheivement as it ticks their boxes for them. YOu could equally say you don't understand why people play games to completion, as the same applies.
As for the cheaters, I cheat regularly offline, as I sometimes want to experience some bits of the game I can't reach, or tweak the game to play a certain way. As long as it's offline it hurts absolutely nobody, and it's really damned cool.
I have been trawling through some of the inaccessible areas of Dark Souls II, and I love being ablt to do this.
So it does depend on exactly what you mean, but it does sound like a fair amount of the issue isn't them., but your empathy.
