Steam Client on PC is too dumb to remember my settings
Hello Community,
Hello Steam Support,

I'm a very long time on this Steam platform, and since a few years, Steam is unable to remember my settings.

One of them is the view in my library which always is "List View", but sometimes, with no reason, it's switched back to "Detailed View". No matter why. Not even a Client update is necessary for Steam to forget my view setting! Propably, there're caching issues.

Another setting is elementary because it's related to automatic updates. Apart from a missig global setting that works, I've to tell every installed game how to update (what is pesky enough). But that's not the point. There's one game which starts its updates whenever it's up2date patched and a new one is released. That's inacceptable because ALL my games are set to manual update!

Please look after these bugs and eleminate them. It's really very annoying to re-set at least every 2-3 weeks the settings I've stored. Maybe you're using Windows 10 then this is not a problem to you... ;-)

My platform is Windows 7 x64 on an Intel Xeon E3-1270v2 with 32 GBytes of RAM. But, for sure, you already know that.

Thanks in advance, and have a good time!

I have had no such issue.

You have something on your system that is cleaning files. One of the files in where such information is stored for Steam.

If you have a file cleaning program, (ie: CCleaner) then add Steam as an exception so it is ignored.

I do not have any file cleaning programs. They often do more harm than benefit. It's a long time I've used something like this.

Steam should always remember your settings.

As SOT said, it's likely some cleaner and / or other security program that's interfering with Steam.

You could also probably be doing abrupt shut-downs without properly exiting Steam.

This results in a TON of issues, and can even result in games appearing as uninstalled.

File corruption etc usually happens.

As I've said, I don't use any clean up programs, and there's no (so-called) security software installed (more than often I've had massive side effects from that).

Steam has a validation for integrity of its game files; where do I find such a function for the Steam client itself? How do I start Steam with a self-validation? That the client ends up unclean is a case a programmer must calculate, at least a malfunction system driver can lead the system to crash or you have a blackout (wife has switched off the fuse...). To think further, one has to re-install Steam every system crash...that's impractical.

Win7 Ult on an i7 here; never seen this issue

That the issues do not happen on some other systems does not mean they don't exist. But thanks for your answers.

Everything you mentioned is in a locally stored file.

There is something on your systems messing with configs.

The only thing that messes with Steam config files is...Steam...

No, your OS manages all files. Anti-virus has access to all of them as well and many other programs that could be installed. Then there is hardware issues that could cause loss of data. If there is lack of space on the drive, then it may not be storing the data as well.

There are many local reasons to cause it.

It isn't happening on the vast majority of other user's system. That points to a local issues.

I've had this problem on a prior installation on Windows 7. After a clean install, this problem persists. I don't have any other issues like that with other programs. Anyway, file inconsistencies should be avoided by the NTFS file system which can't be changed on a Windows 7 installation partition. My file system is clean, anyway.

If there're any other informations you need to engage this problem, please let me know.

Also, remarkable is that it only refers to one game. For all other games the manual settings do fit.

About Steam updating a game regardless of the automatic updates setting being set to: Only update when I launch it.

This is a clear issue with the Steam client, I've open an issue report here if you want to share your feedback about the topic:
