Why so much hardrive space?
Just wondering why STEAM itself takes up SOO much space on a pc hardrive? The games themselves eat huge amounts of space, why does the website do that even more? I'm not a tech guy so I've honestly no idea why this is? Do I HAVE to have steam on my pc to play a bought and downloaded game?

How big IS your Steam installation?
Frankly, we can't tell you what's wrong without specifics. Which folders in your Steam directory in particular are taking up so much space? If it is the userdata folder, that one will likely be filled by a lot of screenshots and other game-related savedata. If it's the music folder, you may have a bunch of soundtrack DLCs downloaded, which you may want to delete if you don't need them.
Your cache for online content may be a bit crowded, depending on how much you use the overlay and store to browse the net, both on the service and other sites.

I haven't had to do a clean reinstall of the client in years, so there's a lot of baggage involved, but outside of my Steamapps and Userdata folders, my entire client takes up a little over a Gigabyte. That's really not all that much. My AMD driver temp directory takes up as much sometimes when I forget to clean it manually for a few update cycles.
Believe the steam program takes 100mb or so. Now all games you install will land in this folder if you do not move it.
1.39GB my steam install folder takes up with no games installed.
Going into properties, it says steam is over 350 gigs. The folder "steamapp" is where the majority of the space eating is loceted, 300 gig in it. I've freed up space to get my game going again. Like I said, I'm not tech saavy at ALL. Thanks for the feedback!
Btw, it took me hours to fix the initial message "steamui.dll" error that started all of this! :steamfacepalm:
"steamapps" is the folder where Steam installs all your games. So thats why that folder is so big.
Its your installed games. Go into steamapps/common to see all the individual game folders.

steamapp/common is the default directory for your game installations.
im not seeing a problem here. Games take a lot of space, so of course the steam directory will have a massive footprint on your harddrive

Looking at my steam installation. Total size is 70.7 GB, if I take the amount away from Steam apps, which is where games are installed, the total comes to 700 MB.

I have a 480GB SSD that Steam is installed on, that makes it 0.14% of my HD being taken up by Steam. That is extremely small. So no, it is not taking up soo much space. it is taking a miniscule and negligble amount of space.

Well it's bloody fantastic that your steam takes up miniscule space but let me remind you, the op is talking about his pc and a problem he is having on his pc, not your pc. Don't be a tosser forever

The OP has no problem, he simply doesn't understand that his Steam folder includes the games.
Which is something Eisberg mentions, as he say that the total Steam folder for him is 70,7 GB.

So actually Eisberg is showing how the OP should look at his folder to determine how much space Steam takes up and why.
His reply is very much on-topic, while yours is not. You are just trying to have a bash at Eisberg without actual reason, so you're actually the tosser here.

Who calls 700MB as being "sooo much space" in this day and age? 700MB is never "sooo much space" now days, not even close. And it is objectively silly to call 700MB has "sooo much space"

How big is his HDD? Not yours, his. It's safe to assume it's smaller than most if space is an issue. Someone with a small drive would say 700mb is big whereas someone with lots of space would say 70gb is big. It's relative. Your specs aren't his.

What is the ops pc experience level? Judging from his posts it's minimal. Does that mean you should berate him or help him? A decent person would help. A knobber would berate. I mean the op clearly states he has minimal experience. Try helping him next time rather than repeatedly typing "sooo" these forums are here to help. Not to try look blasé, cool and alpha.
Uhm ... may I ask ...

@OP do you know that all of your games will Be installed in your steamfolder ? Means the more games you install the bigger your steamfolder becomes.
300 gigs is not much
Its like 5 modern games (5x60gigs)

Have y'all somehow missed how OP basically declared his confusion/problem solved already?

But yes, keep bickering about nonsense, please. OP has expressed himself well enough to not require your pointless hypotheticals and arguing for his sake.
