it is possible, and most likely, that Valve does load balancing depending on how popular a game is, so they'll dedicate more bandwidth to the games that are being downloaded the most vs games that are not being downloaded as much. You could try changing servers as well in Steam's settings cause it could also be dependent on congestion on the servers and some servers may not be as busy as others.

Since we don't know which games you're attempting to download or update, how large those downloads are, nor where you are in the world, or your internet provider, or your hardware, or...

It's not steam. click download and do something else, if it's taking a while. If it doesn't take a while, say "yay!" and play your game when it is done.

To be fair, I know I have seen variable download speeds in the past, even after downloading 1 game after the other. Big variable, like full speed on one game, and then drop to like half on the next game, and then go to like 75-100% on the third game.

You believe that. But if we had to pay a dollar for every claim from random users about it's never them or their system or their ISP at fault, we'd be infinite dollars in the hole and civilization would collapse.

I for one haven't experienced the sort of thing you're claiming, not to my memory of using Steam for nearly 15 years. Am I just lucky to not have been hit by these issues? Too clueless to realize it? Or maybe have you discounted a few variables too readily because it's easy to blame Steam and then sit back and not have to do anything but keep complaining?

Yup, if it really was on Valves end we'd have hundreds of posts about it... I too have never had this type of issue.

well lets say the person has super fast internet, their speed tests show top speed all the time and every other gaming platform downloads at their top rated speed.

then we go to steam and see downloads wildly fluctuating from top speed to 0 or simply running slow.

i guess we can then suggest its a steam issue, which i usually find is the case and then steam drops an update and everything is working fine again.

i can almost 100% assure you there are "hundreds" of posts about it, proving it would be difficult as every uses odd titles and word stuff differently, let not forget about the ones that get deleted because they become toxic and rage.

yeah exactly but i really think like Eisberg said its only on the most unpopular games cause like in game like ark or something popular i always have like 9-8 max but in some other games that arent that famous its going down to 3-2 mb or even 800kb

i run 200mb (25MB) internet and i have seen steam hit my max speed, but recently it has fluctuated wildly, sometimes even hitting 0 for no good reason, while tests show my internet is running fine on my gaming pc and my other pc.

its 100% a steam issue and they will sooner or later do some type of update and clear the issue, but for now i guess we have to deal with it.
