Any way to change game resolution without initialising it?

Hello, I made the terrible mistake of accidentally changing the game resolution on Empire: Total War while playing. For some reason the new resolution did not work, and all I got was a black screen for over 3 minutes, after that time I decided to close the game and open it again, but this didn't work as it didn't open (I got a black screen again, then back to desktop)

I restarted Steam and my pc. I also ended up uninstalling and installing the game, but none of these options work. I am convinced this error is due to the fact I changed the game resolution while in full screen mode, which is the reason why I am asking you guys if there is any way to change the game resolution before launching the app.

Right click the game in your Steam Library, click Properties, then Set Launch Options. There, type in -w (res) -h (res) but change “(res)” to the desired resolution.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I just tried that and doesn't seem to work. Is there any chance there is a similar command to run the game in window mode through that console?

Try setting it to the native screen resolution. For example, mine is 1980x1080 so I would put -w 1980 -h 1080

Other than that I don’t know another way.

That's exactly what I did, but I am thinking the problem is not the resolution, but the Window/Full Screen mode.

That's exactly what I did, but I am thinking the problem is not the resolution, but the Window/Full Screen mode.

Tried -windowed, -ws but nothing works. I guess I'll have to give up :(

I'm not familiar with the game, but the resolution is likely stored in a configuration file which if you delete, the game will remake with the default settings. And it's not unusual for configuration files to not get deleted when you uninstall. Check the game's folder, and also places like your Documents folder. People in the game's own forum might have better info if you've not already checked. Good luck.

You may have to edit the config file.

I don't own the game, so am not sure if the file is located there, but I am sure a quick google search can find the correct location if it is not correct.

Thank you all guys for the time you've spent helping me. I ended up looking for that script file on the link Spawn of Totoro speaks about and deleted it. That did the trick, it went back to default config and right now it's launched. Yay!

User probably deleted config file. The game created a new default one

Try renaming / moving the preferences files mentioned one at a time in turn. Might want to start with trying preferences.empire_script in %APPDATA%\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts
