And last but not least, because they can.
I only unpacked my inventory stuff a couple of months ago - I had stuff sitting there for years that you can unpack or something - open them up to reveal other things.
I don't take part in the community aspects of Steam: Friends, Chat, Trade, Inventories, Gems, Steam Rank, etc, etc.
Having a private inventory means nobody is going to pester me.
I had a private profile for years and people wanted me to unprivate my profile. I would keep a private profile if it allowed other users to see I was a long-standing member of Steam - which is the reason I used my badge as my Avatar thing. I only unprivate my profile so that people can genuninely see I have been on Steam for 13 years - because my forum posts only go back a few years.
