Steam is updating games even when my computer is off
So I leave for school every morning, I turn my computer off and leave it for about 8 hours, before I turn it off there are a couple games that need updating, I don't update them but when I get home they are updated so I'm kinda confused since its just taking up bandwidth and I don't have unlimited so its getting annoying, I have over 80 games and I don't want to go through all of them and turn off auto updating so any thoughts on why its updating my games even tho my computer is off?

It can't update anything while the computer is off. Your computer isn't receiving data, writing to the hard drive, et cetera in its off state.

Sounds like you're confusing completed updates for pending updates. Look carefully at the headers in the download section of Steam and note what's queued, for when, and what's been updated.

Is such a thing even possible?

For me I guess, its kinda stupid, but my motherboard has leds on it and they stay on even after I turn my computer off, probably because my power supply doesnt turn off

Check if your family members or other people turned the PC on while you were gone. Take my advice, you can't update your games while the PC turned off. If someone invent this technnology then he would be rich. I've heard some conspiracy rumors that the recent Intel CPUs and motherboards can read your HDD while turned off but power supply is on but it's far from games updating itself while turned off. If you want to be sure try to disconnect internet cable or turn the power supply off. But trust me, games can't be updated itself while the PC is off.

No one is home when I go to school and when I get home. No one comes in the house at all

If you are windows 10, close all windows then use alt-F4 and choose shutdown.

If you really want to be sure it is shutdown, unplug it.

You can also go into Steam -> Preferences -> Downloads and set bandwidth and time limits for updates. Plus, if you right-click a game in your library and select Properties, you can toggle a game to only download updates when you launch it.

If your computer is really turned off, it can't download anything.

Depending on your definition of "off" this technology already exists and is common place in smart tvs and current gen consoles among others.
If the device is just on stand-by (which pretty much all devices are unless you cut the power), it will still listen for updates and turns on to download them.

However, Steam has no such function.

I understand your point, now I realized the technology itself already exist. But it seems such technology is hard to find in PC area because of privacy and security issues. If some motherboard or CPU companies starting to impant ability to read and write your HDD while your PC off, it would bring whole another level of backlash for it's privacy and security concerns.

Well yeah, because of the security issues now adays but still, I think its quite stupid that some motherboards can read your HDD while your pc is off

Do you use intel my friend?

I suggest you look into Intel ME. Disabling it is not for light hearted, there is a company that will do it for you tho. :)

Locking windows is not ideal, Logout and Shut down when possible. Lock looses internet access sometimes if you set up you GP. However, your password can be stolen with physical access with just lock. As you are still logged in.

what if your computer or laptop went into sleep mode while a game was updating? would that effect the update?
