Is Valve going to crack down on the practice of account selling?
It's been happening a lot recently and it's really easy to notice too when an account suddenly becomes active after being inactive for 10+ years.

In accordance to the SSA (Steam Subscriber Agreement), users are not allowed to transfer their accounts or use them for commercial purposes. Yet sold accounts never have action taken upon them.

Is Valve going to address this in any way? It shouldn't be difficult to figure out whether an account is sold or transferred to someone else simply by using the account's last few known geolocations.

I do love the topics with the idea "Valve should do more" about X. Because it's such an easy thing to say and allows the speaker to ignore all the details and difficulties Valve would face in wrangling users. And it's based on the idea that Valve has the power, authority and resources to do more but have elected not to. It's great,

First Valve has rules and those are pretty clear. And I'm sure those rules are enforced on some level. But Valve cannot micromanage user behavior. As long as account information like email, password, etc can be change. And as long as accounts are a thing of value, users are going to buy, sell or trade them. I imagine the rules come into play more so when someone doing this has an issue and demands support from Valve.

This sort of request doesn't appreciate how much work active and aggressive enforcement would be. Or how futile it would be. Like remember when the MPAA and the RIAA ended movie and music piracy? And how much great press they got suing people one at a time relying on IP addresses? Valve would easily find itself in the same boat because going all in on an issue like this and trying to enforce the rules ends up creating at least as many problems as it solves.

So Valve's policy is, don't do it, so don't come crying to us if you do because we ain't gonna fix your self made issues or compensate you for your losses. So users should take great care when considering doing things off site and not sanctioned by Valve. It enforces a reasonable level of user responsibility and consequence and that's simple and works as well as anything else.

what if someone hasnt been online for a while and then moves they would get banned so your idea wouldnt really work, im sure they have a way of keeping tabs on such things but for the most part on the user end it doesnt really matter who owns an account because they must abide by the same rules as anyone else and are subject to being banned if they cheat etc.

its best not to worry about it and just play the games and report issues you come across

welcome to the internet it sounds like you must be newer to online gaming and computers

Yeah people who brag about having sold their accounts on reddit and the likes are often banned.

Whether they are or not, that would hardly be visible to you anyway. So you're free to invent whatever narrative you want, but you feeling like nothing is done doesn't actually make it so. It just means you're not privy to what happens to other people's accounts behind the scenes. Get used to it.

Users can't transfer their accounts. So if someone dies his account is lost forever, he can't leave his expansive game collection to his heirs? Is that even legal?

I'm sure Valve's lawyers had nothing to do with terms of use and no one has asked that question in 16 years...

That would make sense. Companies online like to create ludicrous terms of service and until challenged these stand in their various digital fiefdoms. The concept of digital inheritance hasn't been relevant for long enough in order for the law to catch up. But I remember hearing about court cases regarding itunes inheritances. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years any such rules like "you can't transfer your account" are abolished. Frankly I'm not sure I can see the legal argument against selling an account even.

In most cases there's no way for them to verify it anyway. One random guy buying and playing games is just like any other random guy buying and playing games.
Beware if you buy games on site like G2A I try to get a refund for a game I have bought from the seller (World_of_games) I way expected an activation code and receive a Steam account instead.... 2 week now my message Paypall and G2A to get my money back and nothing yet.... they all seem to care less even if I told them it's an illegal practice.....
