They are a Triple A studios.

Indie has always referred to a much smaller and self dependent studio that makes cheaper games.

Valve published through Sierra first. They only became a publisher after that.

And yes, they've always been a triple-A studio, regardless.

Indie, they both develop and publish.

There's no such thing as AAA company, there is AAA budget for game.

As a developer I would say Valve is somewhere in between indie and AAA

But technically Valve is also an Independant. Selft Dependent is the key term of an indie since really the size of an indie team is irrelevant. If you have the start up capital you can have a fairly large team.

Both Indie and AAA are just very loose marketing terms used to evoke a certain predefined imageery in consumers. It's MArketing. The thing is, it's becoming meaqningless these days as we are now seeing indie games with as much polish and graphics as AAA games.

Indie stands for independent, at least it used to. Obviously nowadays people refer to indies as smaller companies (usually) like start-ups and so on. Perhaps the definition has changed but still, being an independent game developer technically means you're an indie as you are not tied to an external publisher.

As for AAA, that label tends to be used for 'big budget' large games. I never really looked up what the AAA stands for though, perhaps someone else knows what it actually stands for.

The reason Indie's definition has seemingly undergone a shift is that independents were for the longest time little garage developers. WHo coded the game, and distributed and marketed it themselves.

Non-Independent developers worked for or with an publisher in exchange for capital, or distribution and marketing assistance. AN indie may be able to drive around htheir hoime town and talk retailers into putting their games on a shalf or allowing them to tack it up on a notice board in the store in a ziplock bag (this was actually how id software initially distributed Wolf3d), but that doesn't work for stores in the next county, state or another country.

Indie is the same as self-published. Which ironically makes Asscreed an Indie game since it is developed by Ubisoft and published by Ubisoft.

As for AAA. It's basically a meaningless term. As yourself. What is a AA or A game, Are their B and C games? It's just a meaningless term coined somewhere between the games jjournalists and the marketing agencies.

Nah, triple A means tripple (A)sshole nowadays. No doubt about it. Look at all the gambling mechanics they are implementing in their AAA games, to transform dumb or mental unstable players into payers.

You mean the same MEchanics that have been in MTG, Sports Trading Cards and Cereal box prizes for literally decades now?

Indie still means independent.

By-the-book definition means an Indie game is one that's been published without financial support of a publisher. In that regard Valve is still an Indie developer. One that can pull AAA budget games.

Intelligence means knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom means knowing it doesn't belong in a fruit salad.

Indie doesn't mean anything in the games industry as long as games like Unravel (Electronic Arts), Bastion (Warner Bros), or Dust: An Elysian Tail (Microsoft) are still uphold for prime examples of indie games.
"Indie" is basically the new "Action" genre.
