Valves Servers
Summer sale, first day, OF COURSE the servers cant handle that! We know that! So, why not do something about it? I'm baffled by this. Having a massive sale, knowing your servers are not capable of handling it, still excpeting profit (magically, they still profit) when (VERY crude estimation) 60% of your customers can't even buy, hell most can't even look at the store page because of heavy load!

Im not a tech wizardry master, i don't know nearly enough about servers, but i do know that Valve is a multimillion dollar company that doesn't do anything about its server issues.

TONIGHT? I'm lucky if I even find a window to buy anything, so first day is wasted pretty much on overloaded servers. Nice going, Valve

So how many millions should they invest for 3-4 hours of a huge traffic surge that only occurs twice per year (at the start of the Summer and the Winter sales?)

They have enough to improve their servers so they can handle the first day, that's when the most people are there: Most profit. They'd earn the money they spent back more quickly than Half life 3 would sell.
So your saying that people who had to wait an hour to buy a game today, would buy more if they didn't have to wait?

Sorry I don't buy that, yes it would be nice for this not to happen, but I don't think it will effect the total sale intake in the least, it just means a few people take a bit longer to buy the game(s) they want on the first day but how many would not buy what they wanted at all because the servers were clogged for the first few hours of the sale?
Il like to point that first of all we have like 2 million more users then last year, so they likely did improve the servers
Second of all the store was back like 1 hours after the sale started, and has around the same load, its likely that the reason it take a little while was the server opening a second area to expand to do it
they are doing it every year, and any how why is every one jumping in so fast? the sale is not gonig to chagne prices :D:
Also no limited stock (out of keys that need to be refilled)

Yeah because server rentals don't exist right?

You don't buy that? A good chunck of users are going to be "casuals" who just want to buy something quick. Customers have a short attention span and if they are not serviced quickly will leave to find their product somewhere else. Thats how customer service has always been. Everyones not like you and will wait it out.
Nope, still not believing that people waiting for the Steam Summer sale, and jump onto Steam as soon as it started, but because the servers were borked for the first few hours they decided not buy anything, that's just silly.

This may be hard to believe but people have these things called "Lives" and "Jobs" that require them to be other places at times. Crazy I know, but that's where this precious resource "Time" comes in to play. Stop me if I'm going to fast. So these people with "Jobs" and "Lives" spend their "Time" wisely and waiting for a Steam store page to load isn't spending "Time" very wisely.

You have a two week window to purchase your games. Sale prices will be the same for the whole sale. You're not missing any timed deal.

An awful lot, and it's awfully hard to do it right. It's not a problem that can be solved by throwing money at it.
