I'll get straight to the point:

Is it scarier than Amnesia: The Dark Descent? No.
Is the game revolutionary? Also no.
Is the game solid enough for a fun horror experience? Yes, for the most part.

Amnesia: Rebirth is better AND worse than The Dark Descent and SOMA in many ways. The variety of environments, sound design, resources management and puzzle design are great and definitely hold Rebirth a strong case in those aspects, along with some pretty tense monster encounters.

However, Frictional chose very weird and perhaps half-baked design decisions which affected the pacing and the narrative of the game for the worse. The game itself feels a bit rushed and rough around the edges, especially in the narrative aspects, making it hard to care for most of the characters. The game struggles with what it wants to tell you at first.

Even so, the game gets really good in its second half, focusing on an otherworldly plot that ties in to the original game from 2010.

I'm certain that fans of the original game will find this one enjoyable, although not without disappointment.

I've been a fan of Frictional Games since 2011 when I first played Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I've since played their Penumbra trilogy, SOMA, and was pretty active in the modding community at the peak of ATDD custom stories. SOMA currently sits in one of my top 5 favorite games of all time and it set a pretty high bar for Frictional Games in my eyes. The story, the pacing, the enemies, all so digestible and emotionally deep!

Rebirth however, feels short and convoluted. My main complaints are:

• When the game initially released, the new sanity system was obnoxious. If you stood in the dark for maybe 10 seconds, the game would spam .pngs and loud sounds at you at nearly-one-second intervals. It quickly went from spooky jumpscares to incredibly annoying. I was about halfway through the game when I decided to take a break because of it and thankfully they have reduced it. It's now much better but unfortunately for me, it killed the immersion like a slaughterhouse. This whole mechanic seemed so unlike Frictional, who focus on psychological buildup and creep as opposed to cheap scares.
  
  
• ATDD's storytelling and list of characters were pretty bad but the gameplay made up for it. With SOMA's storytelling and cast of characters, it was fairly easy to keep track of who the NPCs were and what happened to them. I figured with this, they finally figured out how to not oversaturate the plot. With Rebirth, the plot might be even more convoluted and difficult to follow than ATDD. They throw nearly a dozen characters at you in the first 15 minutes without a significant, immediate purpose to them. I think the only people I remember off the top of my head were Tasi, her husband, and Leon. I remember Leon because I think he was the only crew member to have an enemy type, as well as FANTASTIC voice acting. He was the only memorable character in the whole game for me, even more than the husband (I can't even remember his name right now lol). 5 years later and I can still remember Brandon Wan's name from SOMA without googling it, poor guy.
  
  
• There seem to only be two enemy types!? Sure, ATDD only had two as well (physical enemies. Not including shadow and water monster) but that was an old game on a small budget. Skinny ghouls aren't mysterious or all that scary and the octopus guys in the netherworld were more cool than anything. After seeing the grotesque designs in SOMA and even TDD, I was pretty disappointed to see such a small, uninspiring list of monsters.
  
  
• The lantern oil upkeep is tiresome. It burns out in about a minute at full. Please Frictional, stop having fuel for your lightsources. Having to hunt for oil and matches was probably a third of my playtime. SOMA didn't have fuel for the flashlight and it even came on by itself and I had zero qualms with it. I know you guys can do more than oil-hunting.
  
  
• The game takes cinematic control far-too-often. While the game and its animations are quite pretty, the game often takes control of the character for even small situations. This is a rather small complaint but I remember the team saying in a blog or interview that they don't like cutscenes and prefer having the player "live" through a cutscene. In SOMA, I could do tasks while Simon and Catherine had a deep conversation with each other or talked about plot points. Even stopping to check on the baby in Rebirth was oddly frustrating to the point where I stopped checking in the later parts so I could keep going.
  
  
• There were way too many times I had the rug pulled out from under me. See the smoke in the distance? Sudden rift in the floor!... Just blew that door open with a sweet tank after going through a bunch of ordeals? Whoops, it somehow fell through the floor instead, your efforts were basically pointless... Oh I can see the rift over there! Just kidding, the train is now going elsewhere. It got to the point where anytime Tasi got excited about progress, I just went "where am I going to fall in the next minute?" followed shortly by said falling. Don't manufacture conflict like this.
  
  
• SO. MANY. INTERRUPTING. FLASHBACKS. Flashbacks that would take over the screen and remove control of the player. TDD's flashbacks only slowed you down a bit and gave a wacky screen effect. SOMA thankfully didn't really have any, only human blackboxes and transmission nodes. Both of which could technically be avoided if you didn't want to listen.

On the positive, the music is nostalgic, the sound design and voice acting is amazing as usual, and the presentation is top-notch. The Traveler's Pendant was REALLY cool yet horribly underutilized. But really the negatives far outweigh the positives for me. I apologize for the wall of text but I have a lot of trust and appreciation with the folks at Frictional Games for being such an inspiration to me and to see this game fall flat like this was honestly quite a shock. I think they're at their strongest when they work with sci-fi and despite my complaints here, I look forward to seeing what they do next.

Amnesia: Rebirth is a direct sequel to The Dark Descent. Unlike A Machine for Pigs, it has stronger ties to the original game, although you won't be in the same setting, or playing as the original protagonist.

Instead, you play as Tasi, a plane crash survivor that sets out to look for her missing crewmembers, in the deserts of Algeria. If you know the story of the Dark Descent, you'll know why that's quite exciting.
I will refrain from talking about the more interesting aspects of the narrative in this game, because there are a lot of really cool things at play here that are best discovered if you play the game blind.

Rebirth is similar to TDD in a lot of ways, however very different at the same time. Like the developers' previous game, SOMA, Rebirth is filled with a lot more narration by your character. She will voice her thoughts, and comment on notes after you have read them. All with fantastic voice acting.

Because of this, I found that there wasn't a constant feel of existential dread like in TDD, but that tradeoff comes with a very intriguing story. There are some beautiful environments, intriguing concepts, and an overarching story that kept me on the edge of my seat. TDD had a great story too, but it did manage to scare me just a smidge more.

That's not to downplay Rebirth's horror sections. In between comforting areas filled with warm sunlight, you will be hunted, and chased by creepy monsters. The designers did a great job at constantly playing with your expectations of when they will appear, and tricking you into undesirable positions. And the sound design helps bring it all to life in a terrifying way.

There's an additional option to lie down on the ground, which makes you even more hidden. It makes for some really creepy moments, when you can just see the monster's legs walking on the other side of a desk you're behind.

Like in TDD, you have a lantern that can be filled with oil, as well as a match that can be lit for a smaller radius of lighting. While the match burns, you can light a few other environmental lamps, which removes the need to use 100 tinderboxes per room, if you're clever with your match usage.

The game does a great job at rewarding you for thoroughly investigating rooms. Items are hidden in very interesting spots, covered in other junk, and it helps make the place feel real, like it was lived in.

Puzzles are still a thing in this game, and I found them to be overall very clever. They're not too hard, and not too easy. You have to think outside the box just enough to have you scratch your head for a bit, only to get a satisfying feeling of accomplishment after you figure it out.

The only slight downfall of the game is from a technical point of view. Sometimes the graphics look a bit dated, and there are limited FPS and Audio options. But those are very miniscule complaints.

Overall, I think it's a great sequel, with just the right amount of familiarity, while at the same time bringing loads of really cool concepts to the game. There are tons of great surprises that I didn't want to showcase, so if you like the idea of a horror game that's heavy on narrative, with some superb voice acting and setpieces, I highly recommend playing Rebirth.

Well, I'm putting a negative on this one, the game is not bad, but as a huge fan of Frictional Games' works since the Penumbra series this time I'd like to ring the "careful not to stray" bell in the hope that they will notice it.

I didn't have a great time with Amnesia: Rebirth, not a terrible time thankfully, but still, not the best of times, and I'd like to express why, as I replayed The Dark Descent and SOMA very recently before.

First I'd like to talk about the positives, the environments are absolutely stunning, if there is something to keep in the game without any doubts, it's the art direction. Despite a very limited technical aspect by today standards, the environments are incredible, texturing is wonderful with heavy use of clever parallax mapping, and while the texture resolution in general can feel limited, it is one the best examples of texture resolution doesn't matter for a game to look great. The use of dynamic lighting is generous too and makes the environments pop and feel alive (or dead but in a striking way if you prefer haha).

Sadly, as far as I'm concerned, I think it is where the positives ends, the story is interesting, but takes a while to pick up, and most importantly, is horribly told.
You are bombarded with flashbacks and an incredible amount of notes to read, and 80% of those notes are not interesting at all and feels like padding and time consuming for nothing honestly.
Amnesia TDD did a much better job at this because it was a game about immersion and gameplay/atmosphere first and story second, so there was just the right amount of lore to keep you interested, and cleverly paced to not overwhelm you.
One can argue that SOMA kind of suffers from the same issue, but SOMA somehow feels more mature in that direction, and I feel that the story is much better presented, and overall much more interesting, but that may just be me being a huge Cyberpunk themes nerd.

But that's not the main reason of the negative review, the main reason is the gameplay. In 10 years, there has been literally no evolution, and in fact regressions, on the Penumbra/Amnesia formula. The game feels way too easy, scripted, and convoluted. The stealth mechanics and general gameplay systems feel way too simple and outdated, and again, I've replayed TDD and SOMA recently and they are just way more interesting, even SOMA with the absence of inventory screen and mental health asks more things from the player (remember Theta labs?). Also what's with the level design? The "hub" feel is almost completely gone and the game is almost 100% linear now?

TDD was a game about immersion and horror, SOMA was a game about story telling and existential horror, but Rebirth? It feels like the game doesn't know what it is trying to be, and has very serious pacing problems. The ending has some cool moments but it's too little too late, and also too short.

With each game, while Frictional Games' creations still feel interesting to play in a way or an other, it seems that they are slowly fading away from what made them special in the first place. And I'm not necessary talking about "making scary games", but about making games that aims to challenge the player's emotions, in all the good ways the medium is capable of, and not only in the form of interactive linear dramas (thankfully we're not there yet, but we're getting dangerously close).

Be ambitious! not only on the creation itself, but on what it expects from the player! Crazy puzzles! Challenging but readable sections! Challenging level design! All tied with a competent story that keeps us engaged and a focus on immersion, it doesn't need to be the best story ever made!

The Amnesia series returns once more with this third instalment and has had many fans, including myself eager to see the improvements from the past game, and the cult hit Amnesia: The Dark Descent (ATDD). Unfortunately, Amnesia: Rebirth misses its mark and has many shortcomings, but still manages to be a decent narrative experience overall. Many of its 'flaws' will be seen differently by each individual as they're quite subjective in nature. Whilst I recommend this game as a whole, there are many aspects to it that are awry.

- Lack of character development.
- Pregnancy mechanics, checking your baby bump to increase sanity becomes tiresome very quickly, especially with the protagonist’s comments.
- Lack of enemies. Many areas are totally safe and remove any tension previously created.
- Constant, forced immersion ruining cut-scenes
- Can only hold 10 packets of matches at one time.

The protagonist, Tasi Trianon finds herself in the heart of the Algerian desert after a plane crash. Stranded and alone, with fragmented and scant memories, she ventures off into the unknown, impelled to move forward and search for her missing husband. During her trek, Tasi realises that she doesn't only have her own life and survival to consider, but also that of her unborn baby. Driven by her maternal instincts and strong will, she ventures deeper into the darkness, compelled to escape and find normality once more. This becomes the core of the game, in a quite mature and maternal approach to the survival horror genre, however, this may understandably, not appeal to everyone.

Understandably, most players, including myself, are going to compare this to ATDD and whilst gameplay is somewhat similar, I wouldn't say that it is an improvement on its predecessor. The harrowing atmosphere which we know so well from ATDD I found to be completely lacking. I played for hours without bumping paths with a single enemy and once I did, the constant baby coddling and reoccurring cutscenes were sure to remove any feelings of dread previously created.

All enemies (there are just 2 types) can only be found in the last 2-3 hours of the game. Gratefully, Frictional Games have kept their sanity mechanism which can be increased through light, but also uniquely through touching your pregnant stomach. At first, I thought this was interesting and realistic in that it would give a sense of comfort, however, at least for me, this became trite very quickly. A monster could be just around the corner, staring right at me and I can touch my stomach and speak to it with the same repeated baby-talk 'shh little one, it will be ok' and the enemy doesn't hear me and my sanity is suddenly improved.

I actually question Rebirth as a survival horror game, as these elements are so few and far between, I found it to be mostly a narrative Sci-Fi-horror mix. Those looking to relive the fright and jumps of ATDD should look elsewhere. Although I consider myself a veteran horror player, I did not find this game scary in the slightest and it should not be played with only this in mind. The game is dark and gritty, but has more of a focus on a Sci-Fi, SOMA-like atmosphere as opposed to fear inducing elements.

Furthermore, Rebirth is extremely forgiving in its gameplay. I believe I only died once when I was lost, but if players do die, you are respawned closer to the exit and sometimes the enemies even despawn. With already so little enemy interactions, the areas that do require stealth/hiding are thrilling. To make this even easier seems counterproductive if the aim of the game is to have a survival horror tag but remove the survival aspects.

There are multiple NPC's scattered throughout the journey, some can even be spoken with. For any ATDD fans, we know that this is a strange concept. I found that it removed the fear and loneliness that was once curated so expertly before, creating yet another safe environment.
We are introduced to an array of characters within minutes of starting the game, most of which I forgot shortly after. Followed by an ever-increasing convoluted story and lack of character depth, I found myself not really caring about her baby or any of the other people.

Tasi's memories are scattered, but she remembers the people she was travelling with, her husband, who she was etc. Completely opposite to ATDD where everything was unknown until the end. It is also not clear how she got amnesia although players can make assumptions. The cut-scenes are forced throughout the game, triggered by progress but becomes more of a nuisance in their recurrence, especially in the beginning areas which are just memories of Tasi's happy family life - boring.

On a positive note, I liked the inclusion of moral choices relating to her baby as well as the 3 different ending paths. With each ending contrasting one another, this encourages replays, combined with the motivation of Steam achievements.

I don't remember once playing an Amnesia title and stopping to think how stunning the environment looks, but that's exactly what happens with Rebirth. Instead of sticking to the gloomy, caliginous paths, Frictional Games decides to switch things up with including both indoor and outdoor areas, sunsets, ruins, water features and more. That being said, the gritty areas are still just as dark as in their previous titles and the need for illumination is ever prevalent which is fantastic.

The voice acting is very well done, as expected. The decreasing sanity sounds are just as I remember in ATDD, however the monsters are not and I didn't notice any outstanding factors in the sound design as a whole, which is disappointing. Yet, I understand that the developers are taking on a new approach, trying to find a happy medium between SOMA and the original Amnesia, between Sci-Fi and horror and this must be a daunting task. Combined with the new addition of a female, pregnant protagonist which is not commonplace at all in many games, so I praise their bravery to try something new. Without a focus on the horror factor/monsters, I can understand why the sound design wasn't as memorable as the series used to be, but I hope this can be improved upon in future games.

Amnesia: Rebirth is daring in its approach, deviating so fiercely from its immensely popular predecessor and whilst it is severely lacking in survival horror elements, it does manage to find its footing within its narrative story-telling and Sci-Fi focus. Despite its convoluted story and odd pregnancy mechanics, it is clear that Frictional Games are trying to merge the success of SOMA and ATDD into Rebirth but narrowly misses the intended mark and ends up being a decent game which I enjoyed, but is immeasurable to their aforementioned titles.

Better than A Machine For Pigs, but worse than The Dark Descent and Soma.

I loved the dark atmosphere, simple puzzles and exploration. The story and dialogue are well done and thoughtful. I played in Adventure Mode, which lets you play at your own pace without any monsters attacking you. This made the game more accessible to me as a disabled person, since I can't think quickly enough for the regular scary mode. They also did a great job keeping me on track with hints. I never got lost or stuck on a puzzle for too long. It was engaging all the way through and gave me a sense of accomplishment.

If I could apply the Suffering From Success meme to any game developer, it would be Frictional.

You might read that and think I'm referring to some kind of loss of the Frictional magic in this game compared to their previous releases, but you'd be wrong.

I'm referring to the player reception of this game. Frictional's two most recent titles before Rebirth were lauded as genre-defining masterpieces that would set a new standard for survival horror in the following years. Two, their playerbase decided, is a repeating pattern- and as anyone who has watched a hype-train pull into the station knows: passionate fans plus sky-high expectations rarely bode well. Regardless of how good Rebirth is, it will never be good enough for some, because it's neither the game they convinced themselves they were going get, nor is it the game they got before. Comparison is, after all, the enemy of contentment.

Let's dissect this a little further: a good chunk of negative reviews for this game are from players who measure Rebirth not by how it fares as a stand-alone horror game, but by how closely it replicates The Dark Descent. Shockingly, the devs did not decide to create the same game they made a decade ago. I'd even argue that if the devs were the type to endlessly retread old ground, The Dark Descent (and SOMA) would never have been made at all. The former was also released at a time when we were all a decade younger and, for the novelty of it all, less experienced with this brand of run-and-hide horror game. These players have, sadly, been cheated out of a great horror experience by their own nostalgia.

Another chunk seem to be from folks who are all too aware that Dark Descent and SOMA were game-changers, and are disappointed that Rebirth does not attempt to reinvent the wheel. These players have been cheated out of a great horror experience by their own expectation that a Frictional game must always bring something revolutionary to the table.

One more (thankfully smaller) chunk of players seem to be, for one reason or another, disgruntled that the player character is a pregnant woman who dares to speak. There's already even a mod to "shut her up". Make of that what you will.

I am not trying to claim the game is flawless by pointing these things out. What I am trying to point out though, is that much of the negative reception here (critics seem to unanimously rate it between 8-9.5/10) is the result of fans judging it against their personal expectations, rather than judging it as a game.

So, how does the game fare as a stand-alone horror experience, then?

Pretty excellently, but let me make this clear: if shotgun-toting, zombie-killing carnage is what you look for in a survival horror game, then this is not for you. If you need combat or constant action to keep your attention, this is not for you.

If you're the type to take your time, soak up the atmosphere, to seek out and read the torn notes scattered around for any clue as to how you got into this situation, to peak around shadowy corners in fear of what may lie ahead? This is for you.

If you can immerse yourself in what the protagonist is feeling in the moment; if you can see yourself feeling terrified for Tasi as she cowers behind a crumbling pillar, cradling her stomach as horrifying images flash across your vision amid the shuffling horror that is smelling you out in the darkness? This is for you.

The atmosphere seems to bear down on you from all sides as though alive and hellbent on turning you into a claustrophobe. The tension can become so thick and oppressive that Tasi's fear seems to bleed through the screen and into your body (in a good way, you're here to be scared, after all). Emotional terror weighed heavily on my heart, too. It's hard to not feel anxious and protective as you listen to Tasi cooing shakily to her unborn child, trying to claw back the last vestiges of her own sanity. At times, you might feel your spine tingle as you crawl across the floor, knowing, but being unable to see, that whatever stalks the shadows is tailing close behind. You might even feel like you need to take a breather from the game now and then.

I won't give much else away, as this game is best enjoyed blind. If you want to experience fear and vulnerability as you step into the protagonist's shoes, if you want atmospheric, story-driven horror, a dash of mystery, or just a bloody good sequel that fleshes out some of the otherworldly aspects of The Dark Descent (provided you can take off your nostalgia goggles first), this is for you.

I advise above all else, to play it for yourself and make your own verdict. For me, it's clearly a solid addition to the Frictional library, and one of the greatest immersive horror experiences out there.

ok i have to say, i went into rebirth reading all of these disappointed reviews and whatnot, expecting the game to be pretty lackluster and not very horror driven. and then i played the game. what the hell is everyone thinking? it might just be nostalgia blindness for the original and they actually don't like it for the reasons they liked it, idk. But i played these games back to back and I can tell you right now there are moments in rebirth that scare me more than in the dark descent. Not to mention the storytelling - its such an enthralling and emotional rollercoaster that kept me engaged from start to finish, really right in there with tasi every moment wanting her to make it out alive due to not only her being herself, but also a spoiler reason i won't say. There are game mechanics that tie in with the narrative in a way i never thought could work but did, and it was so innovative and fun to see that.

maybe most people are just looking for "scare me now, other stuff later". but frictional was never really about that, and it frustrates me to see people putting this game down because there's more focus on the narrative and they think it dillutes the horror. if you're looking for a horror game thats just solely for simple scares, then go for outlast or something like that. but if you're looking for a game that keeps you immersed and brings you into a world of their own making, then finally taking that opportunity to instill fear and tension into your every move, then amnesia is your thing.

this game is completely worth the money and more, especially from this indie dev team. its well executed, very thoroughly thought out, and there are many tense moments keeping you on edge. No, the flashing images popping up on screen are not trying to scare you, the images have significance and the way it jumps out enhances that significance to the plot. if you know frictional, then you know this fact.

And whoever says this is not an amnesia game, you must have amnesia about TDD.

A severe disappointment, even more so given this game's ancestry. Spoilers.

Amnesia: Rebirth tries to portray itself as the next entry in what should be a renowned horror series given how infamous The Dark Descent has become over the last decade. But unfortunately, the game gets bogged down in trying to craft an emotional narrative that doesn't really land and sacrifices a lot of the horror and game play that made the first entry so memorable.

The game play of Rebirth itself starts out with the implication that you'll be re-creating the same flow as The Dark Descent. Light is scarce, there's a sanity system, monsters lurking around you need to hide from. But it's only after playing for a couple of hours that these elements barely factor into what you do, especially with the creatures. Actual dangerous encounters and scary moments are incredibly far and few between, instead trading this off for scripted chase sequences, an abundance of darkness that is more frustrating to navigate than frightening and the incredibly weak jumpscare attempts when your fear is too high. Any moments of tension are also frequently ruined by Tasi not shutting up whenever anything happens to her. While she is voice acted well, her need to fill in any dead space with mutterings and comments to no one break immersion because it's a reminder that the game is happening to her and not to you.

The monster encounters are extremely easy because of this as well, with Tasi giving you outright warnings you're about to be spotted or you shouldn't do a particular action because she says you shouldn't. Even if they do, there's no sense of threat from the prospect of dying or letting fear go too high anyway. Either of these things happen, you're forced into watching a 'scary' barrage of images that don't make sense before the equivalent of a QTE comes up to get you back playing. Sometimes, this even puts you after the section that caused the non-Game Over, meaning that the game essentially completes the section for you if you mess up.

Which leads to the plot. The story of Rebirth feels incomplete, for lack of a better term. Much like Outlast 2, the details that explain more thoroughly what's going on are relegated to discoverable notes and fragments, most of which don't tell you a lot on their own unless you want to expand and confuse the mythos surrounding the Orbs. This is especially apparent in tablets in the alternate world, where you're thrown all these different terminologies of how that world operates and who these people are but without any background information to understand what they mean.

While some of the call backs to the original game were welcome, both in note and event form, they don't feel like they add much to the story this game is trying to tell and are more like little jabs of "remember this?". Even worse, with how often the game forces you into scripted sequences you can't get away from, the notes are easily missable unless you waste a bunch of time trying to check everywhere to get them. Though I understood the general flow of events, the finer details were missing and I was given no encouragement to backtrack and find more because of how bland the game play was for most of the game.

The side plot regarding Tasi's past also feels half-baked. You're given painfully obvious clues about Alys' fate hours before you're told what happened, and this isn't helped by the over-the-top dream sequences which hammer the point home with the subtlety of... well, a hammer. These don't add much to Tasi as a character except to explain why she has this sudden obsession with keeping Amari alive despite the baby's presence being a direct rip-off of Outlast 2 (growing unnaturally fast and is hinted to be cursed or whatever the case may be up until the end of the game).

Daniel and Oswald from the first two games felt more well realised and believable because they did horrible things out of selfishness and tried to atone for them later. Tasi feels like the modern trend of generating forced sympathy for a character because horrible things happened to them instead. I get that the attempt was to make a more human and relateable story compared to the original game, more akin to SOMA, but SOMA was able to tell such a story incredibly well without breaking the immersion of being in PATHOS-II. If this was an attempt to try and recapture that magic, they failed.

I can at least say the presentation of the game is probably its strongest asset, especially when it comes to the art design of the alternate world you frequently travel to and the more elaborate desert areas of temples and villages. The sound design is also very well realised, especially in regards to the machinery and the creatures. But presentation alone doesn't get you very far on its own, which is where the game falls flat.

If you're looking for a weird mixture of science fiction and personal drama in a game that doesn't challenge you very much, then maybe Rebirth will appeal to you. But if you were like me and were expecting a strong survival horror experience where the story was a means to disturb and enhance the level of horror that Frictional is capable of, then you're going to walk away sorely disappointed.
