Huh... Now that I think about it, that sounds like a more feasible idea.
Even small spin-off titles could help revive this IP.
OOO originally had the game and was sold to Grey Haven so they could keep it alive. Old member from SK dev are at GH so they keep it alive because of loyalty. Cronus still does announcement on the forum to this day.
I think you need to inform yourself a bit more. Nick Popovich left OOO in 2014 to make Slime Rancher. He is not coming back. When he left, a statue was made in his honor at Haven in the garden on the left.
Edit: This was just months prior to the battle sprite, dodge and shield bash update. It shows there was a split in decision or he wanted to branch off to something new. End of Edit.
The fact the game is alive is because GH has the rein and they don't push out promos every 2 week like they used to do to pay off SEGA/OOO. Now they release a promo each month and have brought back sleep status, added casino and style kit.
I doubt you have any idea how the behind the scene works for this type of project and I'll be honest, neither do I. I just know the history of the development of SK as I been playing and following it since June 2011.
Edit2: And I'm all aboard with Nick Popovich making SK 2.0 on C++ instead of Java. Just being realistic, SK will never get improved. The community did it.
As for selling out, the only publishers out buying smaller studios are crap ones like Gameforge or Gamigo who run the games they buy into the ground. If anything, I would rather them take the Epic Games deal, if that's still an option or Microsoft, since they are hurting for some exclusives/studios.
People in Kickstarter are willing to fund pretty much everything that looks somewhat promising, so I don't think Grey Havens would have too much problems raising money.
If you ask me, a Kickstarter campaign would be the smartest thing to do.
Not only because they could get enough funds, but also send the message that this IP isn't dead.
it's just unlikely that any studio would revive this game or make an updated version like a 2.0 deal, because the chances of it going well are too small to take the risk.
This isn't a game that really caters to whales though. It's not WWE Champions, where people are dropping $1000 at a time to be 1st in a new event, guarantee themselves the new roster character and max it out immediately. Most people buy $10 of energy here, a few costume boxes there, some get a starter pack, some get Crimson Hammer, but as far as I can tell, there are no players just laying down wads of cash for millions of energy. This game just doesn't have enough of an economy or a microtransactions system to justify blowing that kind of cash.
not much incentive to fix it, it's too old. needs a rehaul alongside a re-release to get new players, there's no reason to dump effort into a game with such low numbers. people want to play something new and 10 years of exploring Arcade isn't much to run on. GH also has to compete with other games. a new entry in the SK IP may solve this.
there are many ways to change the gameplay while still being SK (could even do a new genre, rogue-lite or roguelike would be a very good compliment to the SK style), plus there is an opportunity to be funded through Kickstarter. there are still plenty of fans, including me, who would support SK on Kickstarter
i'd like if Monomi Park bought the rights, look how well they did with Slime Rancher. imagine what they could cook up?
Yeah and it's not just Nick Popovich that left OOO. Cherub and Chris Lum also went to work on Monomi Park.
