I guess characters say generic commands and similar stuff, but i dont find them very appealing since i dont know what they are shouting or saying.

it wouldnt bother me as much if french voices were included, since the theme of the game is all about a historic fiction set in france.

I usually play JRPGs with the original Japanese as the English voice acting is usually awful with a couple of exceptions. At the end of the day its the gameplay and story that matters and this game is great in both respects.

Japanese voice actors are by far the best in the world due to the insanely high standards and competition because of the huge animation industry. There is really no comparison. The chinese voice acting in the game sounds to me as cringy and generic as any half hearted english dub would. With English I would at least understand it though.

true, i also like better japanese voices when they are available in a jrpgs or games from japanese devs, unless the english actors make a good job (which is rare, but happens, like metal gear solid series, or the ps2 dragon quest 8). English voice actors (from uk) are usually also way better than american counterparts (its probably related to how they dont care about the art, since "cartoons and games are for kids" so they wont care if voices are mediocre, which is funny considering disney is "eating" everyone).

I checked a few animes from china sometime ago, and i think they have a similar issue to american voice actors: they dont feel serious or "passionate". their voices feel bland and generic, so its hard to care about characters from voices alone.

Is it possible to turn off the Chinese voiceovers at least?

Honestly I like the voice acting in this game. I think the guys behind this game have really done their research on the French revolution, and made a believable alt history tactics game. I look forward to their future games!

Voices really aren't bad, and there are subtitles for shoutouts.
In fact, as a change, i do like them.
And i normally am a snob in such points.

how can you tell? i dont know chinese, and voices feel a bit flat, but maybe thats their voice over quality. american voice actors for games are also usually pretty bad (only few aaa games care enough to find good actors that can "act" properly).

thats one aspect, the other as i mentioned earlier, is that it breaks the mood: the game is about a french fiction in the revolution years: it feels weird to see french characters shouting chinese commands, and not have the option to listen actual french voice actors.

its common that people from europe to expect voices or at least subtitles in the most common languages spoken; same happens for americans (which is why sometimes japanese devs make the mistake to hire also bad voice actors from usa, rather than taking care in finding the right ones, with good experience and quality).

having the option to turn off voices, if possible, could be one way out of that distraction, but games feel more interesting when they have good voices in a language that either matches the characters background (+subs), or is one you can understand as audience.

There is a voice volume option.
I don't know ♥♥♥♥ about history, so i just take everything less french as mercenaries or whatever. Works good enough for me.
I'm more interested in the game mechanics then a few shoutouts you maybe don't even will hear if you deactivate battle animations.

Edit: i still like the dialogues.

im not commenting about "History", but about whats the context of the story of the game.

to have supposed french characters shouting commands in chinese could make sense if the story had a surreal and or paranormal twist that justified it cleverly, or as part of a big joke: ie the approach comedies like "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" use, or monty python, discworld, and even rick and morty, futurama, etc.

imagine something similar: vikings screaming at each other in spanish with a south american accent and slang (i could enjoy it, but not as an "alternate history" that attempts to have serious drama as main focus). thats usually perceived as bad dubbing, which is usually very closely related to bad voice acting. if done intentionally bad, with a good setting, that could be funny rather than lame, but it would be a comedy or something like a psychedelic and surreal horror story.

Also imagine if ewoks and every creature in star wars spoke in plain english: it would break "the mood". btw a lot of old, and dirt cheap bad scifi films did this, and thats one of the reasons star wars was able to change a lot of things: sound design.

if you are going to offer characters with voices, why not also offer the option to listen voices that match their supposed nationality and individual background?

Maybe someone should make a french dub mod but that would be quite the project.
Tyr May 21, 2023 @ 4:02am
Whats the big deal anyway? You get US and Japanese games where they don't use the language or even the accents of the characters they are portraying. Seriously get over it and just enjoy a fun tactics game.
