Lossless Scaling

Lossless Scaling

[Outdated] Semi-Official Compatibility Thread (by Thomas with the help of LordTyrent and THS [the latter being the Developer])
Outdated as of 2023.

Feel free to post any results or tests you did below, regarding compatibility.

Please don't forget to check out and follow our curator page so you can see if the game you want is compatible to Lossless Scaling before buying it.

Also "🌟" means it was updated or added to the list on the past 48 hours. "⭐" means that it was added or updated on the last 3-5 updates to the list or it was a request by or added by a member of the community other than myself [Thomas], THS and LordTyrent (the "⭐" also stays for a week due to relevancy). Updates happen normally once or twice each day. The backlog/archive for this webpage are stored here!

Latest update on the list: 10:07 PM UTC on January 31st, 2019 (Moved Deus Ex: GOTY into working and fixed some issues)

Emulators that we tested that Currently Work with Lossless Scaling

DOSBox (Main Branch), DOSBox ECE and DOSBox-X (Alternative Branches) - Tested by Thomas
Observations: The main branch of DOSBox scales on Fullscreen Mode, however, Lossless Scaling is highly recommended, especially if you want DOS (and Windows 95) games to have Anti-Aliasing and because those also scale better with Lossless Scaling than with DOSBox inbuilt Fullscreen Scalling. Also the DOSBox ECE and DOSBox-X forks features proper integer scales and scaling filters and more options than the main branch, so I would highly recommend those (recommendation not related to Lossless Scaling).

ScummVM - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Inbuilt 3x Integer Scaling + Scaling Filters such as HQ3x, however, Lossless Scaling is recommended, since 3x is still small on 1080p monitors and especially on 4k monitors.

FCEUX - Tested by Thomas
Supports: 1x-6x (these values are outdated, custom scale factor added on the BETA Branch)
Observations: Features some sort of an unspecified Inbuilt Scaling

Mesen - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Features 6x Inbuilt Scalling

Nestopia - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Lossless Scaling doesn't scale the window properly in Lower Resolutions; Features some sort of an unspecified Inbuilt Scaling (probably 3x)

puNES - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Features 6x Inbuilt Scalling

Higan - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Features Integer Scalling

Snes9x - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Features Integer Scalling

PCSX-R-PGXP - Tested by Thomas
Observations: You can set the scaling and the internal resolution to however you want.

Kega Fusion - Tested by Thomas
Supports: 1x-6x (these values are outdated, custom scale factor added on the BETA Branch)
Observations: Features some sort of an unspecified Inbuilt Scaling

The Phoenix Emulation Project - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Features some sort of an unspecified Inbuilt Scaling

Mednaffe (Frontend for Mednafen) - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Features some sort of an unspecified Inbuilt Scaling

SSF - Tested by Thomas
Observations: Features some sort of an unspecified Inbuilt Scaling

PCSX2 - Tested by Thomas
Observations: You can set the scaling and the internal resolution to however you want.

RPCS3 - Tested by Thomas
Observations: You can set the scaling and the internal resolution to however you want.

Dolphin Emulator - Tested by Thomas
Observations: You can set the scaling and the internal resolution to however you want. HOWEVER, even with those, I highly recommend you to use Lossless Scaling because window does not change Aspect Ratio if you change it on the game options itself, and at least a couple of GameCube and Wii games (like SSX3) does have the in-game option to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 (Widescreen), but Dolphin it leaves you with black bars on all sides of your screen!

🌟Deus Ex (Game of the Year Edition) - Tested by Thomas
Observations: No mods requered and works with Forced Resolution even in 4:3 to 16:9 without the game being stretched, however I would recommend a patch for it like Deus Ex: Revision on Steam or following this guide since the game runs way too fast with high FPS and the brightness setting is broken, making the game way too dark to see almost anything.

Games that cannot work because they lack Windowed Mode

Diablo 1 - Tested by Thomas and THS
Observations: Even with the Diablo 1 Strange Bytes's Patch[www.strangebytes.com] or DiabloPatch [diablopat.ch] or DxWnd! Apparently those workarounds doesn't make Diablo run on normal window, according to THS.

Momodora reverie under the moonlight doesn't work, it zooms and begins stretching horizontally for some reason.
AM2R doesn't work.
You need to test DOSBox ECE version that includes also a Pixel-Perfect patch

Painkiller series (except Hell & Damnation, i think), lack Windowed mode

Please add me on steam, I need explanation on DOSbox, so I can install this ECE version and you seem to know how to hook it up... I also would like to install Windows 95 on it, I have it already downloaded but everytime I follow the instructions my DOSBox doesn't install it...
Here https://blog.yesterplay80.net/dosbox-ece-en/ you can download it (i'm not a developer of it...)

remember that is already configured with "desktop" resolution and with Pixel-Perfect output enabled as default (scanlines are not available with that output...)

I recommend to disable scaling in video driver control panel (enable only gpu scaling), but this with all DOSBox versions and all games

I don't know if there are changes about windows 95 compatibility... you need to contact official DOSBox forums https://www.vogons.org/viewforum.php?f=53

try to check cpu cycles

Maybe dxwnd can be used for games which don't have a windowed mode?

Test the open beta ver 1.2.0 with Maitetsu:Pure Station
https://store.steampowered.com/app/880950/Pure_Station__MaitetsuPure_Station/

Best played with 1.5x,and it should work with Lose Monobeno as well

Doesn't seem to work for Grim Dawn or Grid.

Would it be possible to add a "scale after x seconds" button as a work around?
(IE after 5 seconds)

Seems some games are blocking outside keyboard shortcuts from working when its the active window making it not possible to upscale.

The idea is to have the game running in a window, then click anything else. IE say the Windows desktop so that the game is no longer the active window.
Then Click "scale after 5 seconds" or the delay hotkey button (IE crtl + alt + d). Now make the game the active window and wait 5 seconds.

Did you try running app as admin?

Both higan and Snes9x have built-in[tanalin.com] integer-ratio scaling with no blur.

higan 104+:
Settings → Video → Windowed Mode / Fullscreen Mode → Integral scaling.

Snes9x 1.56.2+:
Video → Display Configuration (Display Settings) → General → Integer Scaling.
Thanks, I didn't saw that, I'm updating it now

There are games like “GRID Autosport” that suppress third-party keyboard shortcuts when game window is active (focused) regardless of whether a scaling app is running as admin. Unsure where my previous related comment is.

Interesting... let me download it to see
Can Confirm, it does NOT work with GRID Autosport.

Edit: Now it works, see the updated list above

Well, I find it suspecious that MT doesn't own the software on steam and just posted a link to THS's competitor. Please refrain to do so.
