I read your post but never really bothered to write a response because like you say, we very much have different ideas on good character development and such.

That said, I wish I was joking with the DBZ example but it was something that constantly in my mind while playing through CS3. It's very shonen to begin with but the power level, holding back, revival etc. it was like one long DBZ filler episode.

Ok, fair enough, agree to disagree it is then.

Are you complaining CS3 is long? Then wait for CS4 and it's 150 hours ;)

For me, CS3 was longer than CS4, but none of them ever hit 150 hours unless you mean going through it a second time to finish off Nightmare run achievements.

Wait... seriously? I played CS3 and CS4 at same speed and difficult (normal), and CS3 was WAY SHORTER than CS4. Not sure how much, but CS3 didn't even hit 70 hours.

These were my times on my initial playthrough of each game:

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel - 88 hours
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II - 106 hours
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III - 135 hours
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV - 120 hours

My initial playthroughs (all on Hard difficulty) are - and this is for the Madman's Run of talking to all NPC's:

CS 1: 147 hours
CS 2: 124 hours
CS 3: 152 hours
CS 4: 165 hours - and counting!
For me, playing on Normal and talking to all NPC's, all the time, the initial playthroughs were:

CS 1: 130 hours
CS 2: 160 hours
CS 3: 155 hours
CS 4: 182 hours
300 hours for my first and only playthrough is pretty standard for me, and you better believe I get tired of talking to everyone after every little thing. I don't get bored of the action or the story though, so by the time the credits roll I am very satisfied.

CS3 is actually too long. It's a 130 hour long game but nothing happens until the last 30 hours. The game is padded both on the macro and the micro level.

On the macro level, the first half of each chapter is slice of life highschool stuff. This served a purpose in the first game by building up emotional investment in the cast so that there is tension later on when they are threatened. This is unnecessary in CS3 because we already have the cast. We should be in the high tension part, not act 1 of the story again. The second half of each chapter is spent chasing after Ouroboros and failing to accomplish anything at all. No Enforcers are captured, no plot information is discovered, Ouroboros is never foiled, and the heroes suffer no losses. You just smash through armies of robots that are promptly replaced. You could excise the first 3 chapters from the game and start at the final chapter and you would miss nothing.

On the micro level, the game wastes time reintroducing every single character, characters who the player has already been well acquainted with for the last 200 hours across CS1 and CS2. Every scene is filled with at least half a dozen characters (if not a dozen) and every single one of them has to get a word in, even if it doesn't move the plot forward. Lots of information that the player already knows is reiterated at length. Too much time is spent on characters patting each other on the back or formalities. And so on. Dialogue scenes take 10x as long as they should.

the game is not long enough imo
