They just exist, except of some specific monsters whose existence in the world is explained ( like nosferatu for example )

One fun tidbit is that on the roads they put special lamps that keep monsters away so travel is possible.
The normal monsters you fight on the roads and stuff are just the world's wildlife. There are a lot of monsters that are of a completely different origin though and those are explained.

The complete lack of any info on monster ecology is one of the glaring holes in the franchise's worldbuilding.

I would be surprised if it didn't get addressed eventually. The scary thing about this series, is that it relies heavily on mystery, with each entry teasing a bit more of the universe and mechanics there of.

This is great, if they keep making games and it stays popular. This is also great if they already have a cohesive narrative and in universe mechanics figured out and documented....not so great if they wing it and it just ends up becoming a jumbled inconsistent mess.

That being said.....if monsters are effectively just another type of animal, I am kind of ok with that too. Every RPG doesn't need to tie monsters to some sort of big bad event.

Also, thinking about a lot of the monster types. Scorpions, bears, wolves, butterflies, frogs, etc....it really just seems like animals enhanced by an affinity to a certain Septium/Element. I mean, the fact that areas that express the higher elements (Space/Time/Mirage) has creatures that reflect the higher elements (think their vulnerabilities)....it kind of ties nicely together.

This further meshes when you consider that slaying 'monsters' provides Sepith, with different monsters providing different elemental Sepith that align with their element strength and attacks.

Also...Cryptids are unique in the fact that they come from a different plane of existence...according to the Nords, Cryptids...." .... appear at turning points in history when the world is out of balance." Which kind of supports the entire, animals that manifest ability to cast arts and manifest elemental powers tied to the 7 elements are monsters, with disruption and imbalance in the 7 elements allows for extra planar entities (Cryptid) to enter the world.
