Ashwinders are actually really cool creatures. They are created from wizard's fire that has been left to burn for too long. So say you lit something on fire with Incendio and it burned for days; an Ashwinder would be created from those flames. They are big charred snakes that do not live very long. Just long enough to lay some eggs.

Apparently the eggs are from a mythical creature called ashwinder.
Something, something, magic-fire-ash... you can google it.

Now why Rockwoods staff are called 'Ashwinders'... I have no idea, but they do.
The game never mentrions it.
