I would not be supried if the answer is simply: they do not know about guns.
(And yes I know that there are muggleborn wizards and that some wizards life in muggle cities, rowlings world building is not exactly the best.)
Case and point the only muggle invention adopted en masse by wizards was plumbing in the 17th century
Or just make the ammo clip shaped like an infinity symbol.
Bullets are pretty fast.
As for why they don't, just idiocy and spending too long where anything tech could do magic could do better, especially if you want to take the Fantastic Beasts movies as canon and Grindwald literally showed them a vision of the power of tanks and nukes.
.........
Bigger question might be why nobody has figured out a different focus item other than a wand that you can just wear.
And depending on the gun, you can rapid fire them.
How fast can you chant the killing curse in quick succession?
Not only do you not need to speak the spell, you also don't need the wand to cast magic. However, both of these are considered to be advanced techniques that require special training.
It's been years since I read the books, but I think there was a scene where Snape tries to teach the students how to cast without speaking.
