Changed Newbie Zones +More Since Launch?
I loved the idea of Champions Online and the character creation AND the art style, and bought it at launch, but got bored and quit immediately. I also popped back in when F2P launched. It was better but not enough. Buuuut now City of Heroes is dead, and I'm superhero MMO homeless. DCUO had awful customization and powers, sooooo I want to see Champions again.

Anyway, I want to know if anything changed with my few biggest problems with the game.

-I got sick of the starter zones. I'm fine with the fact that the game is nothing but Kill 10 Mooks Pick Up 10 Boxes, I find that relaxing, but the choice between Giant Sandy Empty Boring Desert and Giant Snowy Empty Boring Desert completely bored me. Are the zones still a major slog to get through, or have they been overhauled/redesigned?

-I felt that new powers stopped mattering very quickly. I think once I had 4 or 5 powers, I never needed to use anything else. I stopped being excited about new powers by level 15 or 20, because new ones weren't any flashier or more powerful than what I already had. Idk, I just felt like the power balance was really boring: you got what you needed so early on and the benefits after that were so minimal that getting a new power wasn't exciting.

-I never saw any zone except for the desert, the snowy tundra, and the city. I assumed from those three that all future, higher levelled maps would be equally bland. Do the higher level maps become more interesting, visually or thematically?

I'd love to love this game :) and give it another shot, but before I re-download I'd like to know if any of this is any better lol.

Yes, the game underwent a pretty major overhaul about a year ago. You can't get into Canada until 15 and the Desert until 13 (for the crisis missions). Plus we have Alert content now which means the leveling zones are less populated so there are more mobs to defeat and things aren't as congested. But, what's great about the alerts.. you can do some alerts to skip content you're already familiar with (especially if you have alt-itis) and do the mission content you DO like when you get to the level you need.

ALthought I'm not very familiar with ATs, I can tell you that being freeform, being able to choose whatever powers you want generally ends up being a cherry picker's dream. But.. in order to be viable for a build, especially end-game, you follow a simple rule.

Pick a certain power or few powers and make your build all about supporting and boosting those powers.. you can literally have an energy builder, one AoE and one single target power and the rest boosts, defenses and heals. It's just a matter of preference.

There are lots of maps beyond the Canada and Desert maps. Specifically: (and someone can correct me of I miss one) Monster Island (level 29 to 40), Lemuria (33ish to 40), Vibora bay (level 34-40), etc. So.. quite a few yet to explore not to mention the alerts. Plus we've gotten new tanks, bikes, chariots, exocets (the submarines the Lemurians use), new becomes, new events (liek the one going on right now which is called "Fatal Error" which puts you inside a computer basically ridding it of viruses which is pretty cool and in it's first stage (more to come).

But the game, to me, has always really been about the ability to live as a superhero.. and it's the only REAL superhero MMO out there that lets me have that feeling. Plus the character creator (AKA Tailor) is unequaled in ANY game so far of any genre for that matter.

We also have better gear now with 3 and 4 slots available. and a Fusion system that replaced the crafting system to give you higher level mods to put into those slots that boost stats, dodge, avoidance, etc.

If I were you, I'd play through the tutorial the first time you try to play when you get back, then ask me or some of the other veterans about things (or just hit up zone) if you have questions.

We actually have a really great community as far as MMOs go in the game.

I'm Bacon Overlord in the game too, so if you have questions, feel free.

*quietly puts away all my mourning and comments on City of Heroes*... I really need to let that game go lol.

Thanks for all the helpful advice :) it sounds like they've improved things a bit. What do you do from level 1-13 then, just Milennium City? Lol.

I think I'll pop in and give the game another go. Could be fun :D I always almost-loved the game, just baarely not enough to truly get engaged in it. Maybe the third time is the charm. :falkwreath:

It's ok, t_Z; You are not alone in your mourning for CoV/CoH. :~(

You can level up from just alerts to 40. That's what I do when i hit 15. I'm too lazy to leave the city now and enjoy that zone the most. Seems faster as well.

What are alerts?
Mysteron 108 Jul 27, 2013 @ 6:28pm
Alerts are like mini boss fights/mini missions that take about 5-20 minutes to complete. They are auto grouped content so you dont have to worry about finding a party, just make sure you are at least level 15 before starting them because anything less gimps your party and you may end up failing.
You can get 1-15 from the open world city missions/Socrates

How do you defeat it, (the giant spider) in FATAL ERROR

Well you could always build a time machine and travel back to 2013, or a easier option is to always ask for help.
It is easier with help.

whyever you wrote that in a totally unrelated 7 years old thread...
but fatal error, especially its bosses don't really scale to level, so being lvl 40 and not a dps-AT without self-heals should be enough, besides that, as was said, get other players to help you.
