I had a gold account for a while, then I stopped playin' for a bit. Then I came back, got addicted all over again, but still don't have a gold account.
In my eyes, it's not worth it. Yes, you get access to gear styles, a stipend, and access to more powers and such, but that character becomes LOCKED to gold- meaning if you don't pay, you can't play (the gold character). You can if you transfer them back to Silver, but if you do that, you can't put them back to Gold when you're ready.
Instead, for me this time around, I purchased a Free Form Character Slot. It's fifty bucks (which might seem like a clencher), but you get to make whatever kind of hero you like (of course, some powers are locked and oyu will have to purchase them with Zen). But, at least I have unlimited access to her, and if i decide to spend more Zen, it's just for costume pieces or powers- not a subscript.
Also, I chose to pay for a Free Form Character knowing that I could make Questionite to turn into Zen. It takes some time, but it's totally worth it in my eyes, as you aren't limited to a set subscription, can access any of the games content with the right amount, and it gives the game more playability (in my eyes, of course).
As far as the Community- it depends on the phase you're in. Some can be bare, other can be full to the brim with new and veteran heroes alike. One things for sure, anytime I've been in the Power House, I've seen an isht ton of New Champions.
I got a Subscription for DC Universe because of the Money thing (if you don't have a subscript, you get a cap on the money you can keep in pocket). Though I like that you can have a character paid for and still play for free later in DC, in Champions- I personally wouldn't get a subscript, jus a Free Form Character Slot.
Sorry it was long, I tried to explain it the best I could! Hope it helped, and if you see Foxy Fine around Millenium City, say "Hiiiiiii"! ;)
Is it worth going gold? Yes.
Why is it worth going gold? Well, you get 500 zen a month which is worth $5, plus you get access to all the costumes and all of the ATs, etc. That's all money saved. Plus you get to color your powers, carry up to 214,000 globals in your pockets at a time, get a free hideout, are eligible to start receiving veteran rewards, etc. The list goes on and on.
discovered could not play my hybird characters, would have thought could have played them since had paid for this prior, also not sure how sub is only $10 or $5 month, i was being charged $14 a month, I dont know , one would think that there could be option to play these characters w/t play for free option w/t some kind of micro payment, very disappointed, too bad this seemed to be a very cool game, also was charged on my cc w/t out my permission or notification, if any to this changes might consider comming back, but right now there are lots of games out there without these constraints. Oh well food for thought.
