Why was female Kay/Male Yu excluded?
I don't get why other combinations are available but not this. The work is already there so it was specifically excluded on purpose for some reason?
Maybe somebody can make a mod for it. Probably wouldn't be super hard

Because it will require more voice work.

The devs' rationale was given here. (Basically, it's because they didn't want to have the stereotype of the man being the boisterous mechanic, and the woman being the more conscientious one who loves to cook.)

That seems absurd. People can't be represented if their behaviors are decided to be "stereotypical"?

It's a weirdly early 2000s outlook on gender mouldes and the breaking thereof though. Nowadays I feel like we've gotten over the idea that a strong woman must be based on an inversion of "feminine" traits. In fact that's chauvinistic in its own way, because it implies that these are weaknesses.
A decently complex and nuanced character won't come off as a flat stereotype, no matter what their interests are. To me it speaks of a lack of confidence by the devs in their own writing, when they say that swapping both characters genders would cause a problem. It shouldn't unless the story is somehow still predicated on gender norms.
So in a weird way, despite offering these inclusive options, they also reveal that the characters, as they were originally written, are in fact defined by their genders.

Seems like the writers still have a long way to go before they can write something that is truly free of stereotypes.

Of course they can but their declared goal was it to show a relationship that is NOT stereotypical.
Also it was a huge extra cost to make all these additional voice overs ( for free i may add) and the female/female male/male pairings was something a large part of the playerbase asked for.
Till this update released i did not see anyone ask for male Yu/female Kay.

How ridiculously self-serving to try to push the narrative that people were asking for every other combination except one specific one.

Designating aspects of personalities as "problematic" like this is misguided. Wow, really respected this company in the past, won't in the future.

My wife likes to cook. I like to do mechanical things. Sorry if we offended anyone.

Furthermore, I'd love if a developer could address this point: Why are some personality characteristics "too stereotypical" and hence too "problematic" for inclusion if the characters are in a heterosexual relationship, but the same personality characteristics are a-okay in a homosexual relationship?

I strongly feel that despite all good intentions, what you have created is discriminatory. It makes me feel bad- Like everyone else's view is valid except the way I would like to see things. I have suffered enough in my life for my point of view to be valid too.

That's a terrible thing to say, why would they say this? :xnico:

These days people think women shouldn't be allowed to like cooking because they're reinforcing the stereotype that "Women belong in the kitchen." But any sane person can see that they're perpetuating that very stereotype with female Yu and Kay pairing anyway, this making the developers self made hypocrites.

no way that was the reason... lmfao...

In my review https://steamcommunity.com/id/warstalker/recommended/983970 you can find URL to their post with "reasons" (lol) why they did it.

Oh yeah, this is the reason indeed: blatant racism toward selected group of people.

Makes sense though, Yu is one hell of female character and truly memorable. If we had energetic guy with temper and considerate girl with knack for cooking, it would've been indeed too stereotypical.

Oh, another supporter of hypocrisy? Yeah, being inclusive by excluding somebody specific is indeed makes sense very much. So much that internet is full of it.

Who the hell are you to decide whose personality traits are stereotypical?

My fiancée and her entirely family's women are proud in their cooking abilities. There was a girl on tiktok who went viral because she said she liked "cooking for her man"... what a time to be alive, a skill is only worthy if it doesn't get in the way of anybody's ideologies.

Frankly, you can ignore all these ideologies and unintelligible screams that accompany them. Because there is only a very vocal minority that makes those unintelligible screams, that doesn't even represent entire community, but very, very, very small part of it, which in turn negatively reflects on entire community, because this is what people see in the end.

"but the main reason is that with inverted personalities Yu and Kay seemed much more stereotyped. They didn’t sound anymore like the modern couple we imagined in the first place. Imagine a woman that likes cooking and who is prudent and a man that likes mechanics and is a hothead?" I'm a man who was taught to cook by my father and I've never thought I was "breaking stereotypes" I only focused on how much I enjoy the task, if I were a woman in the same scenario I think I'd feel pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad being told that I'm reinforcing harmful stereotypes by enjoying a useful and pleasurable activity, stereotypes are not inherently harmful, they're only harmful when applied prescriptively ie, "men should be strong and masculine" or "women must act demure and be motherly" a person just happening to fall within these "stereotypes" is as valid and good as any person falling outside of them.
if they're going to include every other possible variation of the couple but not one other that wouldn't take that much extra work, it seems the only purpose is because the devs find it distasteful, but I think they should consider that the exclusion of it does more harm than good.
