Free Camera View
Is there a way to free the camera and fly around my base? I want a zoomed out view of my factory thus far in order to plan the next phase.

The game is mod-friendly. The devs seems to support the use of modding the game. So I'm sure someone in the community has either already made something like this or are currently working on it. But, as for an in-game feature, this is not yet possible.

You can, however, unlock a jetpack and fly around using this later on. This is about as close as you'll get with a free cam using only the vanilla software.

Edit: Someone pointed out that a free cam does exist.

There are only 2 benefits I see to a free cam over the jet pack…. No fuel needed, but fuel is relatively cheap.
And freecam can clip thru your walls, maybe even hide them… where as you would just have to fly around them.

There are camera tools, including freecam under either Ctrl+U or Alt+U (don't remember which). I use it to make my youtube thumbnail screenshots. Be aware it's quite jank tho.

I keep forgetting that is there...
and I can't use it... I don't have a numpad on my keyboard (it's a 75%)

You can use ALT + U to access camera settings. It is warned though that it could mess up the game. IDK what all they do, because I never took a chance to mess with them. Except the Daylight on/off, which is in the same box.

That's why you need a real keyboard and not a cripple. Anyway, you can use the buttons in the Alt+U window to move camera around.

@brnphoenix75 I use it all the time to take thumbnails for my Factorio series and it doesn't mess up the game. That warning doesn't mean anything, probably was put in there just in case.

My Keychron K2 mechanical is the best keyboard I own and How often do you really use The numpad in Games nowadays?
Not that much, in my case.
I wanted the smaller 75% for the less clutter look.
I can always get a separate Numpad, if it really needed it and have it on the left side.

It only came up because you need it, you'd have done better for yourself with a $10 Logitech.

Just spent $16 for a mechanical numpad because I’m never going back to membrane keyboards again.
