Ruiner is a twin stick Shootem up, in the style of Killing Gameshow. Its super fast paced, with a very arcade like feel to it.
This game looks more like a cyberpunk diablo game, with guns instead of swords.
This has a cyberpunk inspired world, more realistic rendering and is an action RPG
And Devolver did not make Ruiner neither, they just published it
Game looks way too good for my taste ;P But let's see how the gameplay holds up.
Hopefully it will look better then Ruiner, becouse there is 2020 now, next gen, ray tracing and all this stuff
- Ruiner's aesthetic is sleeker and mechanized; Ascent seems to be leaning way more into urban grunge and organic grit. They simply do not look alike, artistically.
- Ruiner is focused way more on precise, fast-reflex combat combinations, maneuvers, and action-puzzling. From what preview footage and writing is out there of Ascent, it's generally slower and focused way more on being closer to Diablo or Path of Exile: customizing a build of your choice and progressively making it more powerful to fight tougher enemies to hunt for better loot to fight tougher enemies, etc. Top-down shooting may be the mechanism, but both games seem to be using it very differently. Further, The Ascent will be mutiplayer-capable; Ruiner is single-player.
- Continuing from above, Ascent may in fact have both a story campaign and an "endgame" state where you're min/maxing and hunting for the rarest items to fight the truly toughest enemies/bosses. I certainly don't know, because they haven't said anything about that yet. What I do know is that Ruiner is *not* that sort of game. It's a beginning-middle-end narrative with the "endgame" being perfecting your high score on levels.

Different sorts of games.
This looks like a twin stick shooter to me, but I've found in interactions with some indie devs that it's become this verboten term, and they'd rather market themselves as ARPGs or top down shooters or isometric shooters, anything but twin stick, for whatever reason.
To me, It's like RUINER in a Judge Dredd movie setting.
The main point of yours, is that: "seem to be using it very differently". In my opinion it seems to be not. But i hope to be wrong.
