In this regard it matters where you chose to start. If you chose a location that is nearby Chelsey, you need to retreat and bid your time to locate the research to kill her. You want to start near her LT's and hunt and kill them to farm DNA, and quickly strike back at her in terms of stopping the spread. Secure a few key initial zones and then based on how you play lock down and determine which doctrine makes sense for you to launch raids into infected zones or just take the map piece by piece.
Your early game economy is fueled by murder. Swap your first push squad to target units only, with heavies being the core infantry due to the mass and focused dakka they can push uphill. Spend all your starting money on units, unlock and train 2 medics (hold fire order), and purchase one ammo ATLAS.
Your building busters will live on your helos; this will allow you to control the tempo of the siege and quickly pull them back when you get too greedy. As you expand your pop cap and train more units, fast drop them into the main force, pick up your new 4 best buddies, and resume the dakka. Rinse and repeat as able.
Keep asssault groups in small 4 man divisions; they are your discount engineers, building your forward firebases while everyone else is blasting. Sandbags are amazing for quickly locking down a region, as they are free and do not require zone control to place. And they are free. FREE!
DNA is trap. Ignore it until you have completely secured and advanced your front past any you find. Scientist should always be running, and do not deserve any flamethrowers. They are impressively terrible at crowd control.
