Hi there! Did you try any of the possible solutions from our pinned post? Please see below:

Performance Issues
If you're experiencing performance issues, please try the following:

• Go to Menu -> Settings -> Game, and try enabling Fullscreen Mode
  
• Go to Menu -> Settings -> Game, and try enabling Simple Lighting (Better Performance)

If you're playing on a laptop and the above doesn't fix your performance, please try the following:

• Make sure your laptop is plugged in and Power Saver mode is disabled.
  
• Try using a cooling pad if you have one (trust us, it works wonders).

If you're playing on a desktop with a high-refresh rate monitor, please try the following:

• Go into your monitor's settings and try manually decreasing the refresh rate. We know this is tedious, but it may solve your issues if the above options do not.

how does a pixel game not achieve a solid 60fps?

It has to do with the engine that we use, and the (optional) lighting system. You'd be surprised how much processing power 2D rendering can take, especially since most modern game engines aren't optimized for it.

I just played the demo. Simple lighting on, fullscreen on or off; doesn't make a difference. the game runs like garbage.

Same here. 43-48 fps no matter what.

Change the framrate on you monitor to 60, and you should be good.

The game can't handle high refresh rate atm, so have to force your monitor to 60hz while playing to get 60fps. Pretty minor issue imo.
