Not really a fan of the Plasma Clustergun (or Shotgun for that matter).
As for the Plasma Rifle ... I've never been much of a fan of that either. I've questioned their worth before since the DPS is only "slightly" higher than the Laser Rifle (37 vs 35.7) ... but some people swear by them. The fans seem to think the Plasma does better at "one-shotting" enemies. Maybe so. But for me, it seems more often than not multiple crew fire on the same target anyway. In this situation, the Plasma's cooldown of an additional 1/3 second feel like forever. I prefer the faster rate of fire (and higher accuracy) of the Lasers.
I never felt Plasma was "worth it" and ... as you've pointed out ... the inability to use the new weapon attachments was the final nail in the coffin for me. My preferred lineup is a Laser Rifle + Scope with Incendiary Grenade Launchers carried along in case things get "spicy"!
I leave the scope attached until I really "need" the grenade launcher so as to not take penalty of -30% [for removing the scope] plus an additional -20% [for attaching the grenade launcher].
Cluster plasma is a wokny shotgun. I personally never use them because you risk harming your crew members as well (unless they got fixed in this release).
Laser is fine if you have low weapon skill crew members because you can mount scopes on them, otherwise you'd better end up with plasma altogether.
I'm not a fan of attachment. too situational and you often harm your crew as well if you mess with the lob, but if you enjoy them, they are a solid choice :D
