I think you overthought it.
Oh sorry i misunderstood your issue my bad:S
I thought you dont know how the system works.
Oh...yeah never used that:D
Battlestations is for folks to man the console's afaik:)
If it has uses to arrange defensive positions like in another game...well cool, but i will always manually assign my people who are available.
(Just started to build my new ship. New design too! WIll see how bad it will be:D)
What is annoying is those cultists that always escape. I have to evade, drop and jump again constantly cuz of them. And i did not even leave the friggin starter cluster.
But that one cultist ship being in the number one system where the farm station is is VERY VERY VERY annoying:)
edit: ah now i remember, neat trick.
If you build 2 research stations while you still have just one researches, then the researcher will do 2*3 research points before going to the break room, and going back to continue. If you have 2 researchers with t2 research stations it is possible that they each finish at the same time, or their breaks do not overlap, thus allowing you to use this trick for 2 researchers. So you can double or quadrapule your research speed!
You can also customize each crew member area when it is ON.
I usually set my defense team that way and I just have to select them all and draft them when they are all in the zone.
