What food do you grow?
What food do you grow to feed your crew?

misconception:
you dont grow ONE food, you grow ALL types you can.
only one gives missnutrition.
the kitchen is loaded with all kinds at the same time for a reason. it mixes up all 4 foodtypes to a healthy meal. if one or more are lacking it can still work for a longer time, but the crew will get problems.
there is a reason many player (including me) advocate for a rush in most of the food researches (at least so you get the 4 food basic, of course not monotlithic, as soon you have growbeds you need other techbranches too) . the growbeds are the unrivaled goto first research. the "Tutorial" (thats still pops up when you tell it not to) dont makes a good job in teaching some very needed things.

There are three types of food available in starting. What is the fourth one?

Veggies/fruits/nuts, so the fourth one is meat I guess?

To answer your original question, I grow everything I can - food for the crew, fibers/grains for trade. Then I keep switching between algae and normal food - a few days of algae, until they start showing negative effects from lack of microelements, then switching to normal food for a couple of days.
Also switching to normal food before boarding derelicts.

Isn't algae toxin? How many large beds are enough for six crews? How do you switch between algae and normal food?

Algae has some toxins, yes, that's why you have to switch back to normal food from time to time.

I have 3 large beds for a crew of 6 - growing 2x of each food type, and the rest is fibers/grains for trade.

You switch to algae by disabling your normal kitchen, only then will they start eating from algae dispenser. Re-enable kitchen to go back to normal food.

artifical meat, needs to be researched first, comes very late in that research tree, that why i sayed not to monolithing stay in that tree to this point nonestop.
"normal" monster and human meat has nasty drawbacks. so dont confuse them.

OK< thanks for the information.

Could you have a stable food income from raiding ships? You need decent ships and crews for that. My crews are not built for that.

OK, thanks for the information. My crews had protein deficiency for a while until I researched artificial meat.

All foods cost the same water to grow, so the food with more calories is superior. Every food type is still required for nutrition effects, but lean hard on veggies/nuts and trim the rest as much as possible.

No, not really. You have to move FAST and have a very tiny crew (which makes moving fast very difficult). Food salvage is good enough to lean on the algae machine and eat healthy every few weeks. Internal grow beds are a huge ship project so it's good to hold off on that for a while.

I have two large beds for root vegetables, 1 for fruit, one for nuts, and one for artificial meat. It seems to me that this combo is enough for my six crews. I rarely use algae for toxin effects since I am not sure how it affects my crew.

Yes, each large bed needs 5 infra blocks which means that you need 25 of them for five beds which is fairly enough for six crews. You cannot expand your ship in an appropriate way given the fact that you start the game with 40 infra blocks.
