Addendum: Make sure they wear a space suit while doing so unless you like spores.
As an alternative: make an alienbiome that is sectioned off from the rest of the ship. Now you can periodically farm crawlers and haulers for your composter.
It will probably absorb oxygen and power from the rest of the ship.
I saw a civillian station get infested and the door to the room got damaged. The bugs could not get out and no one could get in (not sure why they did not repair it). The base ran just fine.
I didn't notice one for awhile and then had a 3rd of one of my ships filled with haulers and crawlers... Soo cool, really makes the world feel alive. Like, oh, THATS how all these derelicts with aliens happened.
