Space Haven vs Rimworld?
I don't own either game but I saw videos of Rimworld and didn't like the 2D graphics. In what way is Space Haven better than Rimworld?

I wouldn't say better. Different setting. Also an unfinished game, so know what you're getting into before buying it. For me they're both wonderful games, but I've never rejected a game because of the graphics, so your priorities are unlikely to match mine. Watch a few Let's Play videos?

RImworlds the safer purchase at this point but I actually had more fun on my first run of Space Haven then my first run of Rimworld.

Same genre, pretty drastically different games overall

I consider starting my first run in this game, is it easy to get into?
Like is the tutorial good, tried watching some alpha 16 gameplay but they are too fast and not really explaining things.

Space Haven has slightly nicer visuals.
That's about it.
Don't get me wrong, I like Space Haven, it's a fun relaxing game with a potential (it is unfinished after all)
Similarly how I like Planetbase, despite it being very simple game.

Vanilla Rimworld already is more complex game.
And then there are mods, dear Lord, the mods.
My curent modpile for Rimworld has 570 mods.
Works like a charm, but that is also the reason why I haven't moved from 1.2 (recently 1.4 was released)
Compiling new modpile and then experimenting until order is right is quite a task.
And SOS2 introduces layer of spaceships/starbases and related mechanics to Rimworld, so it scratches similar itch Space Haven does, albeit slightly differently.

I'm curently playing Space Haven to check on updated content, and frankly it didn't disapoint me. Since my last playthrough armor and new weapons were added, plus power system has been reworked.
It's fun and moving into good direction.

But despite all that Rimworld is still far more engaging game for me.

A better comparison is Stranded: Alien Dawn. The games are virtually identical except AD you crash land from space and this game you're in space. But the way you set up duties and such is very close to each other. AD has much better graphics. Both are more or less Rimworld or better still, Dwarf Fortress clones.

Mind the loaded language, please. It's a convenient term but not a fair one. Games in the same genre are not clones. I think it's unfair to represent them that way unless you really feel they have introduced NO new features or content.

Have you played Alien Dawn? If not, get back to me after you have and tell me that Space Haven and AD aren't very, very much alike.
Solanix Dec 14, 2022 @ 7:18pm
Not really. AD turns into killbox/tower defence colony manager like rimworld because they both have that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ scaling that eventually results in constant waves of 200 flying aliens or tribal raiders that require boring cheese tactics to survive.

I haven't played AD yet but it didn't look very similar to Spave Haven except for probably the mechanics that exists in about all games of this genre (base building/survival)
What would you consider to be 'very very much alike'?

AD is already on my wishlist, so I appreciate any info helping me to decide wether I should buy or not.

Start on peaceful - was my only mistake originally. Now I just do one run on peaceful per build. Some challenge initially but once you are mid game you are on relatively (e.g. yes you can still find a derelict with 8 haulers in it vs your one fire team of 4) easy street all the way to the end. Each game will give you around 40-50 hours depending on how you play it.

well both are great games.
Rimworld is a larger game with more features and have finished development.
Space haven is great and very facinating in the start, but as time goes by
the game look and feel allot the same when you go from sector to sector.
Rimworld have more variation, seasons, enemys and random events and more features.

Hobestly both are good games i recommend to get them both.
if you are on a budget i would personaly get rimworld first.

Thank a lot for your info guys. I think I will go with rimworld

rims got more content but thats to be expected as its an older game. i still sunk 500ish hours into space haven.. it helps to be a fan of colony sim genre to enjoy either one. i'm trying to get into dwarf fortress as i've already gone past the refund, but its UI and slide show is painful. space havens RNG is good tho it continues to surprise the player in ways after even 100s of hours, when the RNG overlaps and generates mini scenarios in a sector of NPCs and aliens, the more crowded a sector the more random it gets. I got burnt out on rims 2d is what made me seek out space haven.

i have 1200 hours of rimworld and about 10 hours of DF steam version- i cant get into DF, the slide show animation for 1 doesnt allow me to connect any investment in my dwarves, i cant see their visual details when they shuffle about. and within 5 minutes more dwarves arrive before i've even looked over any of them. all their complexity blends into a sort of white noise. normally more colonists are a good thing except in DF they are arriving too soon for me to invest in them.

the 2nd problem of DF is the UI is akin to punching yourself in the face. now if you never played on of DFs grandchildren then DF maybe this exciting thing but after playing refined colony sims DF is utterly painful to try and slog thru to get to whatever everyones hyped on- i've spent 10 hours in DF just wrestling with the UI mostly while making little progress towards anything.

The problem with DF UI is there is no right click support like a normal windows game, you have to navigate back out and into another series of menus to do something simple instead of right clicking on it to activate a pulldown menu. This is all bragging rights for the nerds of DF to laugh at players like me who hate DF UI because your supposed to use long strings of hotkeys like its 1998, the mouse/kb support is sorta just tacked on

In Rimworld you dont suffer watching A slide show and the UI is not like wrestling a guy on fire.

Yea RW ui is pretty smooth
tutorial is fine, UI is easy to navigate, things make sense.
this is comparing RW and DF, i have no probs with space haven.
