Same genre, pretty drastically different games overall
Like is the tutorial good, tried watching some alpha 16 gameplay but they are too fast and not really explaining things.
That's about it.
Don't get me wrong, I like Space Haven, it's a fun relaxing game with a potential (it is unfinished after all)
Similarly how I like Planetbase, despite it being very simple game.
Vanilla Rimworld already is more complex game.
And then there are mods, dear Lord, the mods.
My curent modpile for Rimworld has 570 mods.
Works like a charm, but that is also the reason why I haven't moved from 1.2 (recently 1.4 was released)
Compiling new modpile and then experimenting until order is right is quite a task.
And SOS2 introduces layer of spaceships/starbases and related mechanics to Rimworld, so it scratches similar itch Space Haven does, albeit slightly differently.
I'm curently playing Space Haven to check on updated content, and frankly it didn't disapoint me. Since my last playthrough armor and new weapons were added, plus power system has been reworked.
It's fun and moving into good direction.
But despite all that Rimworld is still far more engaging game for me.
What would you consider to be 'very very much alike'?
AD is already on my wishlist, so I appreciate any info helping me to decide wether I should buy or not.
Start on peaceful - was my only mistake originally. Now I just do one run on peaceful per build. Some challenge initially but once you are mid game you are on relatively (e.g. yes you can still find a derelict with 8 haulers in it vs your one fire team of 4) easy street all the way to the end. Each game will give you around 40-50 hours depending on how you play it.
Rimworld is a larger game with more features and have finished development.
Space haven is great and very facinating in the start, but as time goes by
the game look and feel allot the same when you go from sector to sector.
Rimworld have more variation, seasons, enemys and random events and more features.
Hobestly both are good games i recommend to get them both.
if you are on a budget i would personaly get rimworld first.
the 2nd problem of DF is the UI is akin to punching yourself in the face. now if you never played on of DFs grandchildren then DF maybe this exciting thing but after playing refined colony sims DF is utterly painful to try and slog thru to get to whatever everyones hyped on- i've spent 10 hours in DF just wrestling with the UI mostly while making little progress towards anything.
The problem with DF UI is there is no right click support like a normal windows game, you have to navigate back out and into another series of menus to do something simple instead of right clicking on it to activate a pulldown menu. This is all bragging rights for the nerds of DF to laugh at players like me who hate DF UI because your supposed to use long strings of hotkeys like its 1998, the mouse/kb support is sorta just tacked on
In Rimworld you dont suffer watching A slide show and the UI is not like wrestling a guy on fire.
tutorial is fine, UI is easy to navigate, things make sense.
this is comparing RW and DF, i have no probs with space haven.
