What's The Deal With Asteroid Bases?

There are new construction items for Asteroid Bases. But how do you build one? These new game features aren't described anywhere that I can find.

My plan is to start my new game with a 2x2 square ship; harvest a ton of resources, and then found an asteroid base to deposit it all on so I can build myself a 2x3 ship from scratch and go on from there. Will the game allow me to use an asteroid base that way?

As part of the missions system, we've made it possible to build space stations and bases on asteroids. Factions can give these missions for you to build a station or asteroid base for them. Currently, it's only possible to build space stations and bases as missions for other factions, and then give them to the factions in exchange for a reward.

Many have asked if it is possible to build your own stations or bases. This is something we have in mind for the future, with a current thought being a separate game mode (station mode). It would require much more work to make it interesting, with events tied to the station mode. As such, our first iteration now is to enable stations/bases as part of the missions system to build them for other factions.

Sounds like a good idea for a DLC. Polish off the existing game and then do a DLC later for bases, would probably make it more worth your while spending more time on it that way and really flushing out the mechanics.

Awww don't get me wrong the ship building is fun but I really want to just build a base on a rock to supply food/medical/ and maybe other supplies. Oh well I'll just keep a eye for when they add that mode later on.
