Energy mgmt
Hi, I've tried different scenarios (even ones with tons of energium at start), but the consume of energy is too high when you reach a meduim size for the ship: ususally i cannot even get to do an hyperjump 'cause i haven't enough enrgy.
Either you reduce the energy costs of structures or increase the amount minable (imho)

what are you doing to require that much energium?
like 3 or more same type production buildings, over use of lights and water collectors?

when your trying to mange energy try to skate close to the requirements of objects 5-6 people per oxigen, 9-11 people per scrubber (and keep enough for a spare for fires) 1 or build when need production equipment, And keep lighting minium (1 ever 3/4 tiles) in workable areas aswell as 1 life suport per room unless they are near hull. And non in an airless room, Because why bother with heat when they are all ready using space suits?
And for the love of what's holy orange lvl energy at some places is fine, no need for green all over the ship. Green is when about 155 energy is stored collectivly in nodes, and you only require that if at all near industry.

And if yor going for shield don't Power plant first when researching, and then a refiney and then x-2 drives. Build a gene, with X1. and only dismantle the old when your refiney is up. And don't us floor nodes to power hyperdrives, use Power nodes.

Even on harsh there should be enough resources for you to start your ship. It will be ugly, and basicly just a flying lifesupport system, but it will take you.
Do not build everything you can, just what the tutorial tells you. Nothing else. It is okay to delete your 2x2 template, and make a 1x1, to make sure you stay within your resource capacity. Even on a 1x1 template, barely more than half should be filled. As said before, lights and heating kept to the minimum. All those small energy consuming items can build up easily.
As the trailer says, she does not have to be pretty, she just has to keep the crew alive.
Later, with more resources, you can make new, better looking ships.

and to save bed space and make sure that not all of your crew sleeps at the same time, use the time table to set up secdules 2-3, No need for beds for everyone just for the time table lot 2 doubles (4 slots) can be used for 16 people on a 4 crew rotation.

The initial energy consumption is very inefficient.
You need to research as fast as you can either:
Solar Panels
or X1 generators and Energy Refining
My suggestion is solar panels as it's easier to get to. Then have a look a look at some of the discussions around how to arrange them to minimise energy usage from the backup generator.
Salvaging and heavy use of the recycler will absolutely murder your early game resources. As others have mentioned, power generation is pretty inefficient with your starting generator technology, and the recycler is an energy hog. Combine that with the extremely slow pace of the salvage activity and it's a recipe for a quick end to a run. Energy conservation is key until you have your solar panels and a comfortable surplus of energium, and that mainly means *not* doing things rather than taking any specific actions.
