Space Haven

Why do refugees demand their own toilet, kitchen, etc?
Hi everybody!

First off - I think the game is in a fantastic state for early alpha! 10 hours in and I'm really quite enjoying it. It seems to be more or less a good mix of confusing/interesting and straight forward. Would love to see more audio effects, a bit more direction on what to do perhaps and maybe some extra details on buildings/research to see what they will produce once researched.

My actual question/problem is - I just got a few refugees and designated an area for them to hang out - basically half my ship, including the living quarters. That's when I noticed that toilet and kitchen became "available only for refugee use", which is ... strange. So I went and removed those structures from refugee areas, but left a path for refugees to be able to access them, however now they complain that they can't access them.

This leads me to think that refugees require their own private toilet, kitchen, beds, etc. Am I missing something? If not - is there any reason for this? This makes very little sense, especially on a small ship. ie. If I were a refugee that just got picked up in outer space, I would gladly use any toilet/kitchen/bed available with no questions asked.

Thoughts?

The refugee system was an expansion of the prisoner system. As such they share similar coding and rules. In this case the rules are simple, even if not completely realistic, refugees and prisoners need an area of the ship designated for their use. That area must include beds, a place to eat, and a toilet.

I really think that refugees should be able to share toilets and kitchens with the crew. I only took refugees once in my playthroughs. After I realized that they need extra toilets and kitchens I never took refugees again, because I think it's too much trouble.

The intention is that you'll be able to recruit them in the future. To do that, they'll have to like you. For them to like you, you must provide adequate services. If you will not want to recruit them, then you'll be giving them back to whomever claims them for money. In this case it doesn't matter if they hate you and you can treat them however you like. However, for me, it just isn't in my psyche to treat them less than human....

The coding part makes sense - considering this is an alpha release - no issues there. I just really do hope that they re-do this mechanic in the future. Everyone should be able to use the same facilities if the captain of the ship/etc designates it to be so. Considering we are dealing with spacecraft - multiple toilets, kitchens and beds is a luxury that should not be a necessity.

Refugees need one bunkbed, one toilet, and one algae dispenser. You can shove these to any corner, even in a 1x1 ship.
They are only useful for one thing though: converting your prisoners.
You can add multiple permissions to a single object, so you should put prisoners and refugees together. They will use the same toilets and kitchens, and most recruitment tries will occur during rec time anyways, which the refugees have a lot of. Also, the prisoners will beat up the refugees instead of your crew when attempts fail.

They are meant to be returned to their faction as their main use for rewards.

Yes of course, but those rewards are not as important, as the crew gain from the recruitment. And you don't have to keep them well, they will still help you, and your crew can stay healthy and energetic if you need them. Refugees are expendable. If I have both prisoners and refugees, I try to avoid getting them home, so they will keep trying to convert prisoners for free.

The kitchen needs to be separate so you can control the food they eat.
I do kind of feel it might be better if Kitchens and Toilets just had toggles for crew, refugees and prisoners.
Then the defined areas would relate to sleeping and relaxation areas.
Prisoners already leave their prescribed area for medical treatment anyway so it would just be the same mechanic as this.
It would also stop them hanging out in the smelly, poorly lit toilet like it was some kind of freaking party zone!

Hopefully that will change, I could understand designated beds, but needing their whole own area? I mean not even bathrooms or kitchen? Lol I guess the crew is racist then.
