Solar flare effects.. too rapid?
First time entering a solar flare system. Didn't know what it was in advance.

Warp in. Scanners will estimate the next flare, okay I'll wait and look for that, ready to jump out if it's soon. Moments later 1/2 ship bursts into flames (uses nearly whole buildspace) meanwhile I was there less than a minute.

My shield console person didn't even have time to walk to it.

I guess in advance maybe having a person on shields would help? But I mean it seems to have gone down a bit quickly.

Solar flares are, as far as I have managed to determine, to the detriment of several ships and a larger number of volunteers (Press ganged scum). Lethal. If it is in a node, get the hell out of there, if you can, do not stop, do not collect 20 dollars. Just pick up sticks, move the hell out. Avoid the inferno of doom.

Two shield generators and leave a few people back on board to deal with the occasional fire, then they can be well worth stopping by to pick up something you really need.
As soon as you arrive put shields on yellow alert (switching to red if it looks like you might have issues).
Just be aware the resulting fuel consumption is high so don't stick around too long, but certainly it's worth it to explore a derelict for crew and transfer any goods across or to strip one or two resource asteroids, but don't wait around to salvage a derelict.

Solar flares still occur very frequently and can be overwhelming if you're not prepared. To my knowledge, they mostly cause damage via overloading stored power vectors. I haven't tested whether or not they have an environmental impact on your ship, such as flashes of increased temperature, but it may theoretically be possible to mitigate them altogether by draining your batteries and shutting down your ship.

Your logistics should continue to work without power, but I'm not sure about your shuttle and mining pods. If necessary, a single battery on an isolated grid would be enough to eliminate the vast majority of the risk.

The issue isn't so much that they can't be dealt with, it's just that their bad effects kick in way too fast. Nasty noob trap.

I agree that if you don't man the shields as soon as you drop in system your are probably in for a nasty surprise, the first flare will probably strip more than half a single shield in one hit.

Fires are just something people need to learn the ropes around, you have to pause the moment you get the notification and isolate the room, then keep an eye on things so you can open up a path to a scrubber as soon as the fire is out.

turn off power generation before it happens. less stored energy in nodes = less fire and damage if any

I think solar flares are fine as is, but they happen way too often. I can't mine more than one resource before another flare kicks off. Seems to be around 8 hours +/- 2 hours or something close to that. I think it should be 24 hours +/- 4 hours where first flare could be 1 hr +1d8 hrs. So, if you can take on the first flare, you can then have roughly a day to do other stuff in system.

I agree it is a pain in the ... but it does give us a good challenge! I only go to a solar flare system if I really really really need to. And when I do it is in and out, I don't think it is intended to mine everything in there or scrape ships unless you go back in and out said system.

It is high risk, and as far I am concerned it is the only high risk option in this game at the moment. Not counting fighting pirates when you are not ready for it :)

My opinion, it is good as is!

^ I think that's both good and bad. Good cause it can make a story/challenge but bad cause most of the time it'll just mean people will skip over those systems. Skip enough of those and you've just skipped a bunch of content. I would say for solar flares there's a lot more risk than reward at the moment, maybe later on when the rest of the content that the devs are planning go in that the rewards match the risks.
