Hot and cold

Can somebody tell me why it's so hot at the front of my ship and so cold at the rear?

And is there anything I can build that would combat those hot sectors or must I just leave them almost immediately to nullify heat?

You are clicking outside your ship. The temperature inside your ship is fine, the overlay confirms that. So there is absolutely nothing you need to do. the temperature regulators inside your ship are doing their jobs just fine.

However, outside your ship temperature can vary wildly. If I had to guess, I would say the OUTSIDE front of your ship is hot because it is facing a star. While the OUTSIDE rear is cool because it is not.

Problem is that I'm facing heat problems in that forward area of my ship, often times over 115°f
Can one of those two machines up there really make it that hot?

Yes, machines can absolutely heat up your ship.

Notice the assembler has three little fire symbols. That means it puts out a lot of heat. If you do not have a regulator in the room to counter balance that, then yes, the room will heat up.

That said, nothing you do in your ship will change the temperatures outside your ship, as you are clearly doing in those screen shots. Temperatures outside your ship can be completely ignored.

youre inner ship temp is fine - there is nothing near 115*f - its the outer hull wich is red (and hot), you can ignore that

Maybe not in the screenshot up there but I did monitor it and it did get to at least 115°f or higher.

This shot shows that area at 123° f.

I'll build a regulator, I thought they were only for heating not cooling too,.

Thanks

Power generators, oxygen generators and industrial machienery should have thermal regulators nearby, becuse they generate a lot of heat on their own. It is a good idea to segment a ship with walls and rooms, so it is easier to maintain temperature. It also helps dealing with the solar heat.

had the same issue. thanks!

Today I remembered about the greenhouse effect! I was having the same problem near a blue giant with my ship overheating in places so I found this old thread. Then it occurred to me to remove most of my hull windows- my regulators immediately caught up and restored my temps to a pleasant green all around.

I wonder if star heat has something to do with it?

Aye...haha. Greenhouse effect is radiation being trapped by a gaseous layer, heh. Radiation goes through, bounces off the surface, then can't muster the oomph to go back through, in it's simple form.

Conduction however *is* your problem, being that windows have a less dense mass then metal, causing the thermal transfer process to move along quicker/easier. It's why in hard sci-fi, anything like a window is usually some sort of layered material, or something more akin to gemstone material then glass due to it being a tighter arrangement, or a combination of both.

All about them little molecules and how easily they can dance around doing a jig to the music of the spheres.

That would be solar heat ;)
