the possibility of self-sustaining ship + crew
is it possible for the ship to become self-sustaining when it comes to power (with enough solar panel maybe?), food and water??

especially water, everytime i spend too much time in one place, i notice the water supply slowly going down,

so i have been wondering, is it possible at all to set up your ship in a way that your water supply would even increase or at least doesnt go down?

No, sooner or later you'll run out of water.

I was just going to make a post about this. Yeah i want to know if its possible to reach self sustainability on everything at one point or not with a crew of 6-8?

you can produce water from the toilets... but i think there is a decline in ressources ..... your people cant ♥♥♥♥ 100% of what there eat.... so you have to secure water from outside the system...

for Solar ... i thought about it .. i tried it and it worked perfectly as long as you near a star if youre solar efficiency is below 100% you will need Energy rods

Could you just trade for water with passing ships?

That's no longer self-sustainable then. Also, it's better to trade Ice ;).

the real problem though is that you need water you won't get back for a variety of things, like getting oxygen or watering plants, so self-sustainability is truly impossible.

As for Solar: How many Batteries did you use?

6 Panels and 48 Batteries ^^

The real world ISS loses about four gallons of water per day with a crew of six.
I'm fairly certain that they have an EXCELLENT water recovery system.

Woah... And the batteries didn't store enough to keep you going until you are near the sun again?

The ISS doesn't grow it's own food though.

i need 80 batteries to sustain me over a longe time ^^

but they are not cheap ^^

With finite resources in the universe and no way to become self sufficient, I get this nagging feeling that it's pointless. It needs a satisfying endgame, like becoming truly sustainable, or settling a planet, to bring in the next chapter of the human adventure etc. etc. I hope the devs have something in mind.

I take it that trading to the AI ships the products produced on your ship for raw materials needed to create those products doesn't keep you going?

Thanks, I'm not that far in, so I'm not really producing anything on my ship and just trying to mine/refine/recycle enough energium and water to keep going. someone just told me about 'Eden', a planet you can find and settle for an endgame. With that goal in mind, I feel like I have more direction and a point to the game, so I'm happy

i think you can be self sustaining. i have lots of gardens. take big enemy ship plunder. and buy out traders i meet for what i need. currently maxed in size 2 2x2s with 100 crew
