Gnoll is indeed quite underwhelming and I've not found him useful. I did find Harpies useful before as they're pretty fast to act and can inflict tiredness state if I am not mistaken. I find some of the tank enemies like Orc and Boarman to be a bit underwhelming and die too quickly. Their only damage is physical and only to the front row, where heroes are already beefed up on armour.
Yeah, with monsters that benefit from heroes having status effects, I find they're more useful as the 2nd group of monsters, after heroes have been inflicted by some effects already, especially if they come right after a trap that puts status effects on heroes. Monsters such as Flame Eater for example can be handy at such times. Though Gnoll's overall damage output was just too low for my liking.
Undead - I try to avoid this class, terrible synergies & relics
Demon - Gargoyle stacking
Elemental - Earth turtle front, fire turtle mid, fire golem back - THORN STACKING
Mecha - 2x spear guy (poison stacking) or 2x guy on the robot legs thing (head explosion demorale stacking), have the spider mech in the middle casting shield first round and spamming flame stacking afterwards
theyre great 2nd room units if your first room strat is to stack tons of bleed and poison on the enemies
Candy cane lady and the fire skelly are also reliably strong.
GNOLLS work well when teamed with Goblins and/or Succubi which apply poison. Their attacks get a good buff on poisoned heroes and they have a good amount of HP.
Skel Soldier was nerfed and isn't a favorite for me now.
Skel Archer got even better with the patch!
Skel Dog and Succubus are always acquired as fast as I find them. Dog can steal an Artefact for me and get me free Tears, while the Succubus can get me free promotions. Since they are both good fighters as well, it's a twofer!
Boarman I just gave up on. Usually he dies without even attacking and I have NEVER seen one get a stun!
Elementals range from very good to awesome! Thorn-stacking elementals rule!
Mechas take careful planning. The best is probably the Hawker. If he's got a single point of Barrier his Hawk damage is doubled...and he's fast! If the back two heroes have neg armor, he'll win the battle himself.
Tank- I keep expecting it to do something great but the heroes' AoE attacks keep whittling down the barriers so he can't get off his best attacks. I'll keep trying...
Roaster- I find it's mostly useful as a blocker, absorbing attacks while others do damage. His sacrifice move is helpful for the Hawker but too little to affect most battles. Overall, he's not very effective.
I quite like the mecha (Hunter) that shoots poison arrows. Since he buffs his own barrier AND deals damage and two poison with the attack, he's the most viable of the mechas.
