Is B-X objectively a bad level?
I've been trying to do B-X on and off for over 2000 (edit- now over 6000 and no win yet!) attempts now. Before this I haven't even ever broken the 1000 attempt mark. Its gotten to the point where this level isn't even fun to do anymore and makes AOFAI seem like a horrible game- until I play other levels (including faster levels such as Options) and have fun again.

As someone who hasn't played many rhythm games, is there something wrong with the level design/ design in general of B-X or am I just bad at it/ have played it for so long with no progress I think it's boring?

Thanks!

B-X is a bad level.

6-X you just need to follow the drums.

I feel the same way; what I'm really curious about is why. So far I think it might be a mix of the song being boring, really precise and fast reflexes, and something else which I can't put my finger on.

Who knows, maybe really fast levels aren't your thing! I somehow managed to conquer B-X in about 375 attempts, so this might vary from player to player.

yeah i just went back and beat it in less than 10, so i guess it's just the combo of not very interesting music and being fast? are you only using one key maybe?

Yep, I am using one key with the exception of those patterns that look like a 9, where I use a strategy involving pressing down two keys at once since using one key is very inconsistent. I've been able to do all of the previous levels (and speed trials required for B-X) until now with only one key, so I feel like it would be difficult to re-learn the entire game with two keys.

Also I poorly phrased what I wrote about other faster levels in the OP- I meant to say that, although I have trouble beating it, I find faster levels like Options pretty fun to attempt.

I went and tried B-X with one key just to see if it was doable, and it definitely is. Took me just a couple of tries, but I admit I'm probably not the norm with rhythm games. I do urge that you try to learn at least two keys - it'll open up the ability to play levels much faster (if you wish) as well as the possibility to play some difficult customs. :)

Thanks for the advice! Do you have any tips for learning how to use two keys effectively? I feel like I can do it for slower songs, but for faster ones such as B-X I don't have the muscle memory acquired by beating an entire game to complete them.

The way that I learned to alternate between n-keys was to just start playing maps on much faster speeds than is required for the speed trials. My speed trial records were wiped when I reinstalled Windows recently, but I had 4.0x on 1-X, 2.0x on 9-X, 2.0x on 12-X, XC-X on 2.0x, and some other notable ones that I can't remember off of the top of my head. Customs helped me a lot too since many of them cannot be completed without alternating between at least two keys.

Best of luck. If you ever have any questions about how to do specific things or want more help in general, feel free to add me and I'll try to help. :)

i feel B-X is just an omage to all the triumph you went to get there, personally i like the song but yeah the speed is something else to be desired

I really wish I liked B-X. The atmosphere is perfect for a bonus level, and it has a really good song that fits everything really well, but I find that all of that is ruined by a single choke point from 68-75. No matter how much you practice 68-75, it will never feel consistent. After that, it's pretty easy, but because of the way practice mode works in this game, you don't get to learn the muscle memory for the finale until you've already died there, and it's easy to die there if you haven't played it before. I even managed to die to the last click, which was really uncool. If I go back to try and get 100% accuracy, I may try using two buttons like some of you are suggesting.

I hated playing world b, in a good kind of way. The gameplay was fairly standard but significantly more difficult and I beat it after about 400 attempts. Beating it was the most rewarding thing I've ever done but I did have to use 2 keys I think. So to answer your question, no it isn't objectively bad but it's not super special imo
Ryu Sei Jul 15, 2022 @ 9:40pm
It's objectively bad due to how does the game judgment works. An offbeat on that speed? Sure, that would nuke my 99% progress. There are so many ways to nerf it so it's not as bad as it seems, maybe just add 1 more checkpoint somewhere.

Also, it's kinda bad due to how repetitive the patterns are. It only took one muscle memory fail to ruin everything.

Talking from experience, btw.
