Long story short, SPG3 just isn't 'finished' and as near as anyone can tell (for various reasons), support is pretty much dead.
It's a haphazard mishmash of features that (mostly) could be interesting if they were fleshed out a bit more but as-is, don't mesh well or create a satisfying gameplay experience. There's a narrative-focused campaign highlighting a single main character that might be of interest -though it certainly hasn't reviewed well - but beyond that, the gameplay is a fairly bare-bones homage to the "Freelancer" and similar games of the early 2000's.
Personally, for a game like this, I'd recommend keeping an eye on Everspace 2 or maybe check out Starlink - I'm sure there are others out there that I haven't noticed yet (that new "Chorus" game looks interesting but I haven't tried it myself). For something with the similar empire-management mechanics of Warlords, I'm honestly not sure what to recommend at the moment. I've just been hoping that this team eventually recovers to the point where they opt to make a sequel.
